Isn't this an early DD?
I thought that these style machines were manufactured as DD machines with this console later in their run with the only difference being the huge lid. Still a nice pair though.

Yes that is one of the first DD models, which is from the early to mid 80s. The lid size gives it away; as lids on BDs left about 2 inches more surface clearance in front. My sister has one in her guest house.

That's the EXACT same washer my grandparents have. It has never needed a repair and still runs like a champ! It has outlasted 3 dryers!
The washer is a 70 series, the dryer looks near TOL.

Having grown up in a Bronx NY apt. bldg. where space is a premium, I recognize that this machine is a 24inch belt-drive...NOT a DD with a wide lid. That machine looks like it was from the late seventies.

Not wrong on this:
The lid takes up practically the entire top. I am not talking about just from side to side, but also front to back. Yes, he BD lids took up as much space from side to side, but they did not take up as much from the front of the machine to the console. That is what I was referring to. I've seen plenty of both versions to know the difference. This washer, as well as the one that Pulsator posted was issued concurrently with BD washers during the early to mid 80s, as the DD machines were being gradually phased in. At the time it was only the 24 inch space savers that were DDs while the 29 inch full sized washers were still BDs. This should explain why both washers above have the center dial console; as that style lasted until 1986 when the DD design took over the Sears inventory, and the newer style consoles emerged. The one my sister has is just like the two pictured above, complete with the 180 OPM short agitation stroke. I must admit I was thrown a bit when I first saw it; scratching my head trying to figure out the model year for it.

After seeing the interior of the machine, you are right and I am wrong it is a DD washer. I didn't realize that these consoles were in use for the first DD models.

Pretty kool to find a spin-drain DD in such good shape. It's a novelty.

A question...
On these earlier DD machines, I never really heard a whole lot of problems with the motor coupler breaking. Did they use a beefier coupler back then? I've seen alot of these newer ones breaking their coupler's within months of regular use.

How interesting! My grandma had this same machine, which was bought some time around 1981. It looked identical except that it had a belt-driven transmission. Why did Whirlpool revert to a neutral drain after introduction of the direct-drive transmission? Did a wash tub full of water and clothes put undue strain on the motor during spin drain? I would love to see one of these early direct-drive models in operation. Does anyone on here have one that they could video?
That looks a lot like the washer that Thelma, my former neighbor, had. Hers was the 24" model in the Toast color. She had the matching 24" dryer. Think they got them sometime in the early 80's as a replacement for their GE Versatronic set.

Now that someone mentioned it, I do wonder if these models had a better motor coupler. We have a 1983 Kenmore DD similar to the one above, and it has only had the pump replaced. It has washed some very overloaded loads in its day too and still performs great.
