I am into bears, 2 legged not 4 legged, but on Mon. evening about 9 pm I had the 4 legged kind in my back yard. I was reading the newspaper facing the open sliding patio door and the next thing I know a bear is heading towards the bird feeder which is about 15 feet from the patio door. My deck is about 1 foot off the ground and the BBQ (which we had just used about 3 hours earlier) was also on the deck. The bear had no interest in it however, just the bird feeder. I quickly shut the patio door and all the windows on the rear side of the house since they are the casement style and it could easily have ripped them off. I got out the camcorder and filmed him for a few minutes. He sat on his rear and reached up and pulled the bird feeder towards him which was hanging on one of those metal flower pot poles. I would guess that he was about 5 feet high when sitting on his rear end. He eventually got the bird feeder down and took it up the hill behind the house but then came back looking for more. Eventually he walked around to the front of the house, past the front door on the sidewalk and then down the driveway, cross the road and down into the marsh. About 10 min. later back he came, up the driveway and then I don't know where he went since there are no windows on that side of the house. I presume he wandered over to the neighbours yard. Needless to say, I have been a little nervous when heading outside because who knows where it could be. And I won't be putting the bird feeder back up for awhile.

Let's just call them Ursi

You don't want to get between an ursus and his food. They get kind of persnickety about such things.

Do you know what kind of bear it was? From your description he sounds like a black bear, which are smaller and less aggressive than a grizzly bear.

You might want to call your local game warden or equivalent to let him know that a bear is wandering around the neighborhood. They may have gotten other calls and are watching its travels with plans to trap and relocate it if it becomes a problem bear (raiding garbage cans, breaking into cars/homes, etc).

That it was just interested in bird seed seems to indicate it hasn't yet become accustomed to human food (bird seed is probably similar to what it would forage for in the wild). But probably best to relocate it while it's still not a problem.

Joe....we know you're ONE HOT BEAR, and spoken for....

Don't think we haven't thought about putting out a BEAR trap to catch you....

and just like chopped liver, we would EAT you up!!!!!oh, the things I could do to you....

men like you don't grow on trees, but we can find you in the woods.......

seeing a bear that close would be terrifying...at least no major damage....

We don't have grizzly's around here. I thought it was a black bear but it had 2 white patches on its chest and people have told me that black bears don't have any white at all. So now I am not sure what it is. I thought we only had black bears around here. My camera software is supposed to allow making still images from the video so I am going to check it out.

That's a good one Yogi, but I don't think I will have to worry about the four legged bears here in Iowa, lots of two legged ones here though. :-)

It was probably a black bear

Black bears can be any number of colors, from white to black. Most of the ones I've seen here in California are a dark brown. And the white markings are not unusual. Here's Wiki on it:

The adult has small eyes, rounded ears, a long snout, a large body, and a short tail. It has an excellent sense of smell. Though they generally have shaggy black hair, the coat can vary in color from white through chocolate-brown, cinnamon-brown, and blonde (found mostly west of the Mississippi River), to black in the east (the same is generally true in Canada, the border being between Manitoba and Ontario). They occasionally have a slight V-shaped white chest blaze. The tail is 12.12 centimeters (4.8 in) long.[7]

He's a pure breed siberian, and a lot bigger than my other 2, their good size till I adopted this one, now they seem so small, my partner gave him to me as a gift, he had to be saved from being destroyed, he's really trained well, and good woth the kids, an excellent watch dog, up all night pacing room to room, naps all day......

Here's the real YOGI, another ham, all smiles and ears down, he loves his Daddy!

Gary....

Maybe you're using the wrong BAIT to catch a 2 legged BEAR!...lol

but, you did get a BEAR!...lets work on a better bait, and maybe a trap, once you catch him you need to keep him....lol

try chocolate cake and handcuffs next time, instead of bird seed, see what shows up!

hint: you may have to wrestle him to the ground...and if he looks like Joe, remember, you can't rape the willing...lol

Joe's one BAD-MAMMA-JAMMA.....hence the name!...Jamman_98

SAVE A HORSE....RIDE A BEAR...Their environmentally friendly!

My experience with the 4 legged kind

Here in fairly rural Morris County NJ ( but still 45 minutes to NYC) bears are a fairly common occurrence. We had one in our trash thanksgiving weekend about 9pm, scared the holy be-jeezus out of us. A few weeks ago we were taking the dog for a walk and one walked across the road about 150 feet in front of us... we went the other way very quickly. Its kind of un-nerving! Our town wont allow bird feedersor anything else that can attact them to your door. There has also been a couple of cases of bear home invasions (not THAT kind guys!) People cooking dinner with windows open and what not, kind of scary when you think about it.
