Ever since I've been messing around with vintage appliances, I seem to prove the rule that nature abhors a vacuum... If there's space in the garage or house, I manage to fill it with some vintage appliance, hi-fi console, tv set, etc etc etc

When I'd tear into a machine, it was usually in the garage which lead to 'clogs'... I'd often have a dishwasher or dryer torn apart with parts everywhere and my Hubby would get ticked at not being able to walk or move in the garage.  Worse still, our climate in La Belle Province being what it is made working on teardowns in winter impractical.  Especially as the number vehicles we own is going up and winter storage is required.

During the lockdown years, I hatched a plot to have an addition to the garage built down in Ogden.  I was trying to get this done 2 years ago, but it had been fairly close to impossible to find good contractors.   We finally broke ground late last summer and work began in fall.  I'm not as strong as I used to be but I managed to help out with some of the rough work before Hubby and I vanished to Brazil for the winter.

While we were away, the contractor took over - he really 'got' what I was trying to put together here, right down to the colour scheme!

Here's a bit of a chronicle of the project.

First steps - foundation and structure

Congratulations Paul! What an incredible workspace and great idea on having stacking shelves to fit more machines. I really like the long workbench and great lighting - it will give you so much space to do bench work.

I have the same radio as you thats on the shelf labelled as Viking.

Congrats once again and thanks for sharing!

Am I turning green with envy, or is it just kidney failure? I moved to my current city from the Wasatch Front area where all my homes had basements with workshops and hobby areas. Homes in my current location all have crawl spaces, which contain humanoid monster creatures. Congrats on your new hobby digs. Enjoy!

New vintage Appliance workshop

Congratulations Paul. It’s really nice to have a dedicated work area that doesn’t have to be shared for other purposes so when machines take a while to restore, you don’t have to worry about parts getting lost and other people messing with them.

I have a dedicated home shop now that can be used for projects like this without anybody else messing with them. It took me nearly a year to finish the 71 lady Kenmore gas combo for example

We’re also going to do a dedicated area at the warehouse for doing vintage appliance repair only there’s also going to be an area for Jason to repair vacuum cleaners and I’m setting up a workbench to do electronic repair and other small work.

What’s your first project in the new shop?

John

First project

I am finishing up a 1954 Canadian Frigidaire Thrifty Thirty range. This will be going to a collector friend in the US Mid-West this summer with any luck.
This was an estate find, in use at the same house from the day Eaton's delivered it until the owner passed away.
The oven door is the last hurdle... I can't seem to convince it to stay shut!
