Behold the Turquoise!

So these two showed up late last night. Obviously they are GE AMericana and I was told they were 1965. I only wanted the refrigerator, but the seller would only sell as a pair, so now I have yet another turquoise stove. Allegedly they are both in working condition. They are currently in our storage shed and I'll be spending some time today cleaning them up (the top oven of the GE stove looks like it has never been cleaned).

Very nice find.  Both are fully operational?  I owned one of the refrigerators once and it was YUGE!  Will both of these be placed into service?

According to the seller, they are operational. We'll plug in the fridge in the next couple of days, but it may be months before we can plug in the stove as we don't have 220 plug in our shed. The fridge will go in the house with Estelle (now have to figure out what to do with the pink one), and the stove will probably go in a small cottage on our property. My husband loves the stove and mentioned bringing it in our main house, but I shot that down pretty quickly

This set belonged to the seller's mother who died unexpectedly, so they are clearing out her house to get it ready for sale. She said her mother bought the pair 10 years ago and they were her pride and joy. As filthy as they are, they were obviously well used.

Yes, this particular model does have the self-cleaning ovens. However, since it will be a long time before we can plug it in, I'm cleaning the old fashioned way right now. Hope to get more pix tomorrow to share.

Cooktop venting...

Is there ventilation for the cooktop? The ad from eBay (link) doesn't mention it.

We'll be replacing the pop-up Jenn Aire cooktop/double oven eventually (only 2 working burners now and it seems to be riveted closed) and something like this might actually work for the space we have! Thanks for the idea!

Hi Chuck,

I believe this particular range has two exhausts. I've linked to another e-bay ad for my exact model of stove. The text is blurry, but it reads "two level exhaust systems." So, there is one for the top oven and one above the stove top.

Sorry about the link. I'm not sure why that's not working. Here's the picture out of the ad I was trying to link. It's an older stove than mine, but still has the exhaust pictured on the bottom right corner. I think all of these double-decker stoves are 30" as well as some of the drop-ins.

Wow! Americana fridge efficiency

Gorgeous! Pea green with envy.

I would love to have that fridge in white. (Actually, I'd love to have it in turquoise, but I know I won't get any traction with DH for turquoise.

So, does anyone know how the energy consumption of the Americana fridge compares to modern fridges? If I remember my research correctly, it was manufactured during the most inefficient period of fridge production with both fridges from the 50s and modern fridges being more efficient. And how does than inefficiency translate into dollars per year?

1964-8 Turquoise GE Americana Refrigerator

These use about 150 KWs per month, which is not too bad for a large ref during this time period. Many other frost-free refs during this time used well over 200 KWs per month.

 

Today a 15CF ref only uses about 50 KWs PM. We are running two of these GE A refs, one in the museum kitchen and the other in our 2nd house, on both I replaced all three fan motors with the newer electronic motors which alone knocks the power usage down to around 120 KWs PM. Some day I would like to try installing a new Embraco compressor in one of these refs, doing so would probably knock another 50 KWs off its usage.

I never thought to consider electricity usage when buying an older appliance. I'll have to keep my eye on the electric bill to see if there's anything noticeable. I wish the retro-looking new refrigerators would be in a more affordable price range.
