Yeah...I HATE beige carpeting.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Living in the country doesn't help any. Neither does having pets.

It requires CONSTANT cleaning and shampooing to keep it looking even remotely clean.

There's always someone or something tracking in mud or my lovely doggy urinates here or there. (By the way, urine odor is impossible to remove.)

Some spots i've cleaned so much that the color has 'bleached' to a lighter color.

Another problem is we have several pieces of antique furniture. The legs leave brown spots on the carpet where they were sitting. Yeah...that doesn't come out either. I've since put 'coasters' under the furniture legs, but the damage is done. I cannot afford new carpet or this whole house would be re-done in a color that is NOT beige!

Yeah, I hate beige carpet.

Anyone with animals will quickly tell you to refrain from white/beige colored carpets. FAR too much time and effort will go into making them look halfway decent, if you're lucky. The original 70's green shag carpet that came with my house hid EVERYTHING! Best damn carpet ever, but it was kind of an eye sore. Shag was replace with a light blue medium pile carpet, but newer carpets are made with 75% plastic (so I'm told) and it looked trashed 5 years later (3 dogs 2 cats at the time). Installed hardwood floors and still looks GREAT 7 years later. You just gotta keep up with the vacuuming since hardwood floors don't hide dirt like carpet does.

Even without pets, it's no fun having it go right up to your entrance door either. That square area gets just hideous and you can never get it clean. When I changed the kitchen and bath to this wood-look vinyl, which I love, I had them cut that piece out and put it there as well. It looks so much better!

There is a cleaner worth trying

It's called "Nature's Miracle," and it does a great job on pet urine, even old stains. It's available at PetSmart, among other places.

Urine odour

To remove the smell from carpet, use a mix of 1:1 white vinegar.

Check that the carpet is colour fast.

- dampen first
- mist with vinegar mix...
- agitate through
- blot up.
- repeat

allow to dry.

Take your shoes off and restrict the movement of your pets.

Whilst it is up to everyone to do as they feel most appropriate, I've never understood why taking off one's street shoes in the home is such a big deal. I wear slippers at home. Not only does that make me look more homely, but it really makes a huge difference in terms of hygiene and preserving my floor coverings. Knowing what I inadvertently step into when I go out, I don't want that on my floors. I like to lounge on my carpets without rolling around in street grime. When I enter someone else's house I always ask if they want me to take off my shoes - I reckon it is the polite thing to do.

For those who are worried about holes in their socks I keep a selection of slippers. If foot odor is the issue, there is soap and water, sprays and smell-inhibiting inlays that one can buy. Otherwise, visitors who make a big deal about taking them off get ushered straight into a tiled area, where they remain until they leave - easy peasy. Nobody gonna spread their s**t in my house and leave me to clean it up.

Are you sure you don't want to re-prhase that?

I take my shoes off as a matter of course, unless my socks will be moppping "your" disguisting floors. If I have to deal with doggie/kitty puddles and bombs those shoes stay ON!

:-)

If you've ever seen a microscopic view of carpeting, it's absolutely disgusting. This is especially true for wall-to-wall carpeting which cannot be taken up and properly washed. Within a few months of installation it becomes a living mat of bacteria, fungus, dead skin cells ("dust" is mostly dead skin), and animals which feed off this food (dust mites, fleas and ticks among others). Shampooing and steam cleaning doesn't put a dent in this muck.

Here in the Bay Area we have lots of Asians, and removing your shoes before entering their home (or at least asking) is proper etiquette. So we keep a few pairs of house slippers in the trunk of our car for these occasions.

I am sure I typed 'gorgeous' - don't know how that word got there. Computer must have gremlins. Very strange that. Never mind (clears throat).

'unless my socks will be moppping "your" disguisting floors'

WELL!! You listen here young lady! Don't assume that your socks are fit to mop, let alone walk on my floors! I'll put you on the tiles alright.

Well....

I KNOW that I won't solve the problem by removing shoes. For one, once my shoes are on, they stay on until i'm ready to take them off. The other dwelling inhabitants are the same way.

I've tried vinegar on pet stains. It didn't rid the smell. But I DID find out my carpet is colorfast this way...I've got one spot that is 'bleached.'

I might try the 'Nature's Miracle' if it's not too expensive.

Yeah, I also don't like hard surface floors in any areas besides the kitchen or bathroom. Especially hardwood. I despise hardwood. My old house had hardwood and I HATED it. It seemed like it required special cleaners and what not. It got scuffed and ugly. I'd much rather hoover the whole thing.

Lino or terra cotta tile might be nice, but I honestly prefer wall-to-wall carpet.

I guess I shouldn't be complaining, because I love carpet.

haha...

i have wood floors and i do NOT allow my pets anywhere near my living room at ALL!!! besides i don't feel like having my house reak of wet dog and dog urine from the bfs dogs, i have always wanted wood floors just because it is much cleaner and doesn't have odor. now i am second guessing having wood floors, it is cold in the winter, dirt tracks EVERYWHERE and sticks to your feet, gets all in the bed and the couch, i get sick of brushing my feet off every single time i lay down in bed or the couch!! the bfs mother brought her dog over here and guess what? he peed on my wood floor!! uugghhhh i was so angry, we went to the store and came back and there was a big pee spot, along with a big BLACK stain!!! that would NOT come out, i had to sand the whole area with sand paper. it is very frusterating, with wood floors and carpet.

I had Pergo wood floors installed so dog pee could stay there until it dries up and it still won't leave a stain. They take one hell of beating!
