Belts for portable TT

I have a Maytag A50.....any ideas on getting a belt for an A50 twintub?......

mine snapped at the adjoining location....thinking about just using superglue or rubber cement......otherwise the belt is fine, no cracks or wear....

my fault......I'm not thinking....yes the poly belt for the impellors.....

snapped clean where they were joined.....

I have the A50 and a Hoover TT......

the hoovers drain hose has a kink where it comes out of the back, I will either put a clamp to keep it open, or slice that part out and make a reconnection...a small slinky may slide over it also to prevent this from happenning...

loose pulleys

i have two A50s,a '75 in avocado and a '78 in harvest-on the '78 one of the
impeller pulleys is a little loose on the shaft and rocks on its roll pin,making
a clunking noise-if you have an A50 that clunks with impellers running it might
have a loose pulley...I haven't fixed mine yet,but drilling and tapping the pulley
for a setscrew at 90* to the roll pin should fix it.

A-50 Thumper

My 1st A-50 did that, it was an early 1970 model, never got worse, but somewhat annoying. The rollpin design is a little weird. The 1980 machine I have now is fairly silent. I do like these little machines, very cool. I have the washer and dryer in white, be nice to have color.

PS...the Hoover is Avocado also....not to mention the Speed Queens, and the 1-18's

Avocado

..is my favorite appliance color. I have several Hoovers in green, and would love an A-50 set in green. John has a set in green as well. I'm looking for a green Hoover dryer for my stack set, my current set is Gold for lack of a better color.

My A-50 set is avocado, too, and I like it. I also like the Coppertone. I think it's neat to have a period piece in a period color... Ted

LOOSE WASH PULLEY

You can just drill another hole in the pot-metal pulley 90 degrees from the first and use a new roll-pin. The polly belts are heat welded together so you can try to re-weld it or if you find a replacement that is too large you can cut it down and re-weld it. You can always buy two MT DW belts and make one for the porta-washer or use two WP dryer blower belts, both of these are still available.

I didn't know you could make a belt from two others...or possibly fix a broken one. How do you heat weld them together?

I was thinking a flat soldering iron......one piece on each side, and as they begin to melt, slide them up and together all at once.....

I am gonna work on making a replacement........seems like a simple windshield washer hose, and a connector glued together might work.....

NLA PORTA WASHER BELT

Martin I don't think it would be too difficult to use a 3/8" wide V belt for this purpose if you change the motor pulley, you could use a MT HOH motor pulley and you would need to add a spring loaded idler pulley from a clothes dryer to maintain proper belt tension. This is the way this machine and the MT belt drive DW should have been built in the first place, but MT was trying to control cost on both these appliances and took the cheap way out.

I did it!

a simple piece of windshield washer hose....a 1 inch piece of tubing for air shocks, to join and hold the ends together....a dab of glue....and presto!

she's functional again........

what do you think?

Please report how it works, you know, at one time I thought about that as a solution as well. Where did you find the orange? I do however wonder how long before the rubber or if it will become stretched.

Its simple windshield washer hose I had in the garage....I had black also, but thought the orange added color......can get this at most any auto parts store.....it pays to have a brother who works at PepBoys.......

I measured the hose out to what would fit around all the pulleys, and then cut it off about an inch shorter, for a little tension, and then used a smaller piece to join and hold the ends together with super glue, just be cautious of the insert not too big to cause a lump, but yet flexible enough to work with the tube in action....

I think I am gonna make one also for the hoover.....it seems really floppy as well....

Love the orange color. It's a real standout. It very clearly shows how the belt runs through the machine.

the new belts, both on the Maytag and the Hoover, has really made the machines kick ass at washing and tumbling the clothes...especially the Hoover, should be used with the lid closed, it is really churning me water......reminds me of the first one I ever had....

the old one on the hoover was really floppy and stretched....would turn the clothes, but at a slow pace, obviously from the excessive slippage......

try a new one on yours......just to see if you have any difference....

Sorry, but the guy that sold the machine to me told me they were working.

I hate when I get something for someone and I take their word that it is working, it breaks my heart that they're not when I deliver. (Sigh)

Eddie....don't sweat it......this is to be expected in our collections....

these are still nice machines, and they do function well......belts snap, hoses break......they are 40 years old.....it happens!

on the Maytag, I got 2 complete loads done, went for the third, and then it snapped........tried to fix the old one, or purchase a new one....no luck
so I reserved to make one, and it works, at the same time, may helps others for when it happens......

on the Hoover, it has a kinked drain hose, they ALL have this happen out the rear of the machine......all I did was cut out the kinked area, inserted a fitting, 2 clamps, and I am back in action......this one also has a stretched out wash belt, and I repaired it the same way.......

these machines now kick ass in washing......and you have to love that spinner!

I now can't decide where to display them....so many options!
