Bendix 7168

Has anyone got any experience of changing the door boot on one of these? I picked the machine up a couple of weeks ago and it seems to have an unusual fastening for the boot onto the tub using a split pin. I'm not sure how to tighten the band up if I take it off by removing the pin.

Here's a picture of the pin at the top of the seal. Can't do the multiple photos on the iPad so will add them separately

The machine has suffered some damage as one of the top suspension springs had come off by the soap dispenser and this had damaged the dispenser itself. I found a replacement dispenser only to be told it was out of stock and they would let me know when it was back in. Well the new one arrived today. It's a bit different so will have to do some modifications to fit the top but it's better than trying to patch up the old one

Just need to track down a new drawer front or figure out how to patch this one up

I might need to get a new pump for it but apart from that it seems to be in good working order so hopefully the door boot isn't too hard to do

Boot clamp

Hi, Congratulations.It looks to be in good shape,one of the quietest washers of its time.The boot clamp is quite easy to undo/do up.The strap at one end of the clamp passes through the slot in the pin ,so by turning the pin either unwinds,loosening the clamp or winds it up tightening the clamp.Just put a small screwdriver through the eye of the pin to use as a key to turn it.Hope this helps ,kind regards Nige.

Oh never seen one of those pin screws, the 7147 boot I changed last week had the usual clamp ring and long screw..Did all future Bendix models have this pin system Nigel?

Hi Nige

Thanks for the advice - just like opening a tin of corned beef lol. Good job I didn't remove the pin then. You can see a serated edge on the top of the band itself by the pin but it's not obvious that it turns. Will give it ago and report back. Am excited to get this going as they are really well built and it should be quiet - the pump is quite noisy but it might be better when there is water in it as I took it apart and it was spotless.

Mike - I wonder if this method is because this machine has a concrete weight attached so access for a screwdriver is difficult? The Haynes guide doesn't mention this type of fixing but does say that some of the machines with the front weights require them to be removed to change the seal. The pin must be a method to avoid this I guess.

Oh, interesting clamp thread, must check later models to see if they carried it on!! Steve can you post a full top pic to see how far the concrete weight protrudes over the top of the vitreous enamel tub compared to the 7147 earlier model - wonder if it was bigger to do with the faster spin?

great to see you get stuck into another restoration, yes just like a corned beef tin. Interesting this is the clamping method used for the boot on the bendix LT, so maybe a bit of mix and match over the years.

Also Steve if you need a boot I may well have a spare.

Please ask Rob if anyone needs a boot off an old model machine I took 4/5 black bag fulls along with numerous other spares.

I've taken a few more pics which show the top weight. There is also one on the front of the tub. The soap dispenser is removed ready to be replaced. I've never seen plastic hoses from the valves to the dispenser
