Bendix automatic Home Washer MODEL D (511)
Hi everyone, the story
I spotted the Bendix on eBay and thought that’s not to far from me but do I want it, living at home with your parents and clogging up there garage with another machine making seven in residence and not much room to move.
Anyway I had missed out on a vintage TV which I have an interest in restoring too.
My step dad saw the listing for the Bendix and sed why not go for that and I will take you to fetch it.
That was the result I wanted and so the wait for the last day of the auction started.
I reduced the numbers by letting the Tricity Bendix AW1053 go, well I had it fostered by a work colleague who was desperate for a machine, its hard letting go of them but I now it’s being looked after and will be treated well.
The last minuet was a fury off bidding and it reached my limit of £500 but chanced £512 and won it for £511.11, hell that’s a lot of money and that’s why it’s now know as the Bendix 511
I paid with PayPal and then the worrying started, no contact from the seller not a word no contact details came up on eBay, panic set in, £511 quid is a lot of money.
Luckily Gary, Mike and Mathew and some other members saw the machine re-listed a few days later, not for sale but asking the wining bidder to contact him as his computer had crashed and frozen completely.
Gary gave the phone number a call and it would not connect, he noticed that a digit was missing and tried again and spoke to the seller, fantastic.
I then spent the next two days trying to contact the seller and started to panic yet again with no response, what’s going on do I trust this man.
Eventually I did make contact and he seemed OK but more trouble followed when he asked for cash on collection, I have paid with PayPal but he can’t accept the payment with no computer and all his accounts had been locked out including eBay and PayPal. The payment had cleared my account by this time.
So I contacted eBay for assistance which was useless and was informed that I would have to wait 10 days before a case would be instigated and a further 10 day till a claim would be made.
I the mean time the seller had also made contact with eBay and meet the same response.
I then contacted PayPal who where very helpful, on checking the amount of the transaction they froze the Paypal payment and skipped the first ten days and went straight for a claim to get my £511.11 back.
With that piece of mind that the money was safe and would come back I set about scrapping the cash together.
I spent another two day trying to contact the seller and made the date to collect the machine.
The story of the machine, it was the seller’s grand mothers and she had died aged 92 and the house and all with in had been inherited by his farther, selling on to his son the seller.
The machine had been fitted new and the grandmother never used it much preferring the old way of washing with a wash board, hard soap and boiling on the stove top.
The machine had not travelled far too its first home in Bromsgrove seems as it was built in Birmingham and its journey into Wales was the furthest it had every travelled. The original inlet pipes still attached with one original bendix hot tap attached to the one hose.
The house has been total stripped, walls, ceiling the lot had gone, I was looking forward to seeing some of the period features.
The machine had been un-bolted and moved to the front room, and covered with old cloth for protection. Cash exchanged and the slog to get it into the truck started, what a weight but it slotted in the back just right.
