Bendix

Really enjoying watching that thorough single direction wash action, just one thing that puzzles me is that way back then Automatic front loader Washing Powders weren't available so what Detergents were used regarding creating to much suds.

Bendix world

Wow Lee
what a complete and in depth instruction book, makes some of todays single sheet pamphlets look stupid.

As you know I have been gobsmacked by this machine ever since it came up for auction, I am so overjoyed that is all coming together and that it is firmly planted to your garage floor.

Which makes sense considering it totally mechanical:-) no fussing sbout with PCBs it just gets on with the job, like the 3203 keymatic I had, clutches, solenoids, switches and bloody good engineering.

So thanks again Lee and Mat for your skills on getting this machine where it is now

Gary

There is some interesting background information about Bendix on Wikipedia. I used to work in R&D in the aircraft industry, on carbon composite brake discs. I worked for Dunlop in Coventry and at the time, Bendix were one of our main competitors.

No special detergents?

It seems like the Bendix could happily work with soap in its day, just so long as Madam was very careful with dosage. The instructions seem very explicit in dosing soap (and water softener if needed). The warm rinses would also have been beneficial if not very necessary to deal with using soap.

It's a bit like using high-suds powder in an automatic now: you can get away with it if you're sufficiently light-handed with the dosage; the problem is, however, that dosage may be so low as not to have adequate surfactant in the wash water to provide good cleaning.

Washed 2 more loads in this classic machine over the weekend, both hot washes and the wash results are faultless, I have found it better to alter the temperature switch to warm once the wash cycle has completed, gaining better rinsing in the cooler water.

It is very strange hanging out warm washing very odd.

I have also found Percil non bio liquid tabs produce hardly and suds against last weeks Ariel non bio. Gary assures me that Tesco’s own brand non bio will be even better.

Some photos of the inside of the drum.

Notice the very deep ridged front edge to the drum, all most like having a wash board action against the revolving load.

Soap port hose replacement.

Mathew kindly sent me some hoses that could be made to fudge a repair.

The first hose fits perfectly over the tub inlet, From Hoover vacuum cleaner.

Then a Hoover washing machine sump hose is trimmed and fitted to the under side of the lid.

Machine lid back in position and the top hose sits inside the bottom hose like a funnel nicely, it’s a very tight fit and I have to push down the lid to secure it in position.

I will have to wait till next weekend to see if it is water tight as I need a load in the machine to test it, the only time it actually comes into contact with water is during a loaded spin.
