What is the best online site to buy parts for modern machines? I've heard stories of people getting used parts and things shipped damage, so I want to avoid that but at the same time not pay a premium.

Shipping damage is more likely related to the delivery carrier(s) (to the warehouse, from the warehouse to you) than the selected online seller ... although quality of packaging from the seller is sometimes less-than-reasonable.

I determine the part number then shop it at several sources for best price.  In some cases of multiple items I may get them from multiple sources depending how it works out with both price and shipping.

Repir clinic

I've heard some bad experiences about repair clinic, but personally never had any problems so I am content with them. I've been thinking about giving Amazon a try, how is that btw?

My experience...

I try to support a local parts store when I can, but have used online stores also
with mostly good results.

As Glen said, shop around.

One note, if you want to ensure a good experience and are unsure about an online
parts house, call them to verify that they actually have the part. Question them thoroughly before placing an order.

I have had two transactions that did not go so well.

The first was a few years ago with Appliancezone. They strung me along for two months telling me the part was back-ordered. I cancelled the order and placed it with another company and had the part within a week, but, I did call first to verify that they did indeed have the part in stock. Appliancezone did refund my money after being very firm with them.

The second was just recently. I placed an order with Central Appliance Parts for a part that I knew was obsolete but that they indicated that they could get. I kept a close watch on this one. After two weeks I called and wanted answers. The person I talked with put me on hold and called their supplier to check status. Ten minutes later he tells me that the supplier lied, its no longer available, I would be issued a refund, blah blah blah. That was in February and to this day, crickets from CAP. First of March I filed it with the credit card company I used and it was resolved promptly on my end. The credit card company never got a response from CAP.

So, my best advice is to call if you have doubts.

Although you probably won't find the selection of appliance parts that a typical parts house would carry, I would certainly try Amazon first. When my squeeling washer pump needed replacing I checked around. About $70+ from Maytag and close to that at other parts sellers. On Amazon, the exact same pump was $12.95 and there was no charge for shipping. The same was true for the evaporator fan for my Whirlpool all-refrigerator.

Whenever I want or need something or see an item advertised that I'd like to buy, I run it by Amazon first.

Amazon

I also had good luck with Amazon. A timer for a GE dryer and new belts for the Maytag. I was surprised that Amazon had appliance parts. Yes shipping was free because I have Amazon Prime, mainly for the streaming movies, and movies you can rent. I had to send the timer back because it was really a broken timer knob. They did charge for return shipping. Other items I sent back were returned for free if there was something wrong with them so I thought it was all free shipping both ways, but no.

@lorainfurniture

Thank you! I've been looking for something like that, especially with someone who I can trust. I will certainly give you a try. Question, can I run obsolete/vintage part numbers by you? I end up with a lot of cases where an item is listed for sale as available but out of stock. I then order it only to latter receive conformation its no longer obtainable from the manufacture.
