Broils with radiant energy
Everything they are saying about the Ultra Ray, waist high broiler including likening it to Char-broil goodness, was what electric range manufacturers were saying about electric broiling for decades previous to this. It was definitely an advance for gas. The best thing previous to the Ultra Ray burner was a screen surrounding the burner in Western Holly ranges and maybe some other brands that glowed red hot when the burner was on to give some infra-red radiation for broiling.

Caloric!
Nice looking stove,But we had a model from 77 with self cleaning lower over and nothing but problems. The oven constantly died. After the biggest hassels with Caloric my parents got their money back and bought a Roper in 1980 that they still own. The Caloric's were a big problem service wise.

Were any of those eye level calorics 36" wide? I remember Mac and Sally's stove on "McMillan & Wife" as being wider i also remember it as being red. Maybe it was burners and only an eye level oven? Have I totally lost my mind? alr2903
You are correct, there were 36" wide hi-lo oven gas ranges made largely for the replacement market. Wouldn't it have been fun to fix dinner with Rock Hudson?
I just remember them from ads and one in a friend's house. I'm sorry, but I don't remember the brand names.

--were available up until around 1979.The 36' gas model was available with 6 burners (one being their famous "Burner with a Brain" that is a thermoststicaly controlled gas flame you set the temperature for instead of high,medium and low.) and the two ovens. The later models had their exclusive electronic ignition instead of pilot lights and a self cleaning lower oven. Very feature packed model that retailed for $999 in the mid 70's. That,at that period,was a fortune when it came to appliance costs. Cars were going for under $3000.

Caloric was sold to Raytheon sometime in the sixties. Raytheon fired all the Mennonites who worked the Topton factory and moved the operation down to SC. As with other appliance brands that got absorbed in hostility, they went from being the best, to junk. God Bless Capitalism.
