No the BIG SCORE isn't this stuff pictured below, but the mag's will make for some great new Pictures of the Day.

Estate Sale Gary is here we had to stop home to pick up the appliance dolly and were back off to a sale to move a great new find out of their basement!!!!

Hint: 1957

Pictures to come later on after I get it home and in the basement and wipe it off!

1957 Vented Wash 'n Dry Westinghouse Combo!

We're back, the beast is in the basement. Here it is the second one known left in the world now, the other of course is Greg's beautiful 1956 model.

It has some surface rust that seems to scrub off, its intact and everything seems loose and free, even the pump which I was surprised about. More to come...

WOW...EXCELLENT WORK!!! I've never seen pictures of a Wash-N-Dry Laundromat in this style before! Is the interior identical to Greg's, complete with lots of Smackulation?

Really she's not in that bad of shape for being 48 years old! I know Jon will want you to ship her to Boston to live there...;-)

Oh my goodness Robert!
Did you know about it, or did you just go down to the basement, and there it was? I bet you could not believe your eyes!
This is amazing! And it is vented!
Can't wait to see more pictures, and the required interior shot! :)
I am so excited for you!
Brent

Congratulations

Hi Robert,
Wow what a great find. That is one lucky Combo it has found the perfect home.

All the best.
Hugh

Ohh and he teased me ALL Day with quick phone hints!

Cruelty beyond my wildest imaginings!

ITS GEORGEOUS! Wowo what at year! I would love to have seen the reaction upon walking into the basement!!

Wonderful find can't wait to see the smackulation on this one!
You're right Austin we must step back due to the RAPID drying process-- wouldn't want to get hit by flying kitchen towels being hurled out of the door!

Thanks everyone! Well actually we walked into the kitchen of the house and I found a shoe box full of old recipie booklets. Usually I go through these because on occasion I find old owners manuals. Sure enough I found the manual to the combo, I said to Gary look at what they used to have in this house thinking for sure the machine would be long gone. I have found many vintage washer manuals like that and the machines have always been gone. But this time we go down into the basement and there it is back by the furnace room covered in krap-ola. There was a early 90's direct-drive whirlpool washer and dryer over in the laundry area.

Now that we are home from the movies I have time for a few more pictures. Darrel my 10th anniversary of washer collecting will be next month.

1957 Westinghouse Combo

I want to say Congraluation, Robert!!! ;-D

How did you find this washer machine....I think it's treasure of some front load washer combination...sure?

Ummm...is that right about one direction (right rotation) and how pounds of the drum cylinder and spin rpm?

Peter (kenmorepeter5)

Oh Robert!
This is so exciting!
I can't get over it!
I thought that you might have gotten a call or something about there being this old front loader.
This was really a walk in and find!
The drum in this machine is like new! Was it an estate sale where no family member could give you some idea of what the history was on this beautiful machine?
I am so happy that you found this beautiful machine!
Do tell us about your evening of playing with it, and what you found out!
This is so exciting.
Thanks for the pictures.
Brent

I am so happy for you Robert, I too would have loved to have seen the expression on yours and Gary's faces when you saw it sitting off by the furnace room! Looks like the drum is in good shape. Can't wait for you to try it out. Just wondering if yours has a serial plate on it. Greg's didn't, it had been removed. We are thinking that during the recall the dealer just removed the plate and told the people to keep it as they didn't want to haul it out of the basement. The machine does have a very low spin speed but it sure has a lot of wonderful washing action. It is so hard to believe that two of these machines have now been found in less than 5 months. It does give us hope for what is still out there waiting to be discovered and saved! Thanks so much for sharing Robert!! Terry

Wow!!!!

I'm practically speechless. What an incredible find. (Or, should I say finds, since Greg found one too!) I hope you get get it up and running without too much trouble.

Would you mind posting some closeups of the controls when you get a chance?

Congrats and thanks for saving that beautiful machine.

Mike

FAB FIND...!!!!

Well you did it again...!!!

Would love to have had a video camera of you and Gary hot footing it down to the basement to see if it was still there!!!

Didnt realise the spin was so low,
Where these models all vented??
What is the wattage of the dryer heater ??
Looking forward to seeing the inner mechanism!!

Cheers, Mike

Robert,

...along with the other requests for pics, where you found it and the like, would you be so kind as to email me your home address? Also, please include any bypass codes if you have a burglar alarm. Let me apologize in advance for the damage to your beautiful lawn. It'll tear me up to destroy your landscaping when backing the truck up to the door to steal this Westy off of you. (No apologies for tearing off the awnings though...) I hope you will accept my generous offer of waiving liability payment from your homeowners policy if I were to hurt myself getting this work of art out of your house and into the truck. Because I am so gracious, I will also give you 30 days to compensate me for the cost of renting the truck, appliance dolly, moving pads, and gasoline. Reimbursement for lodging during the trip will not be needed, but your unspoken offer to do so is appreciated -- I plan to drive straight through upon reciept of your home address. I'll extend my generosity further by doing the mapquest work myself, but I simply must stop at that point. Given that I have no room in the apartment for this, I'll be forced to remove the dining room table, chairs, and china cabinet. Just remember who your friends are, Robert, not everyone in Applianceville will make this kind of sacrifice for you! And for your relationship -- didn't you say on another thread Neal would make funny noises if you purchased another machine?

Not buying it, eh? Hell, it was worth a try! Congrats, and I sincerely mean that! And hey, I certainly wouldn't want you to be single, being as happy as you seem to be -- If I had a partner, the acquisition of such a prize would have me humming the closing number of the Carol Burnett show for weeks...

I'm so glad we had this time....together. Just to have a laugh or sing a songgggg. Seems we just get started and before we knew it....came the time we had to say, so long!

I can think of no better hands for this appliance to fall into than yours! I love the work you folks do on these vintage machines, and the machines themselves. But these combo's are beyond awesome in my book. I guess it's the gadgetry, multipurpose gene in me. I beg you to post restoration progress pics -- hell, strip every pic I've ever uploaded, delete my messages, my profile -- kick me out of Applianceville, I'll happily lurk to see your work on this one! I fell in long distance love when Greg's was unveiled at Convention. Be glad I didn't attend, I'd have made a scene, I just know it -- after all, it's Westinghouse, I can be sure!

John
