Freestanding Combo
I was looking at a 1956 magazine this past Sunday and saw one of these in an article about a new home. My reaction was the same as noted above - wow, I didn't realize the free-standing models were available in 1956.
Glad to see someone is going for it.

This the the transmission model with the 4 vaned tub and a spin after each drain. So glad you are getting it Jon. It is amazing to think of a machine this rare and this old still being around. GE got rid of the Roto-Broil water heating capability in the redesign. It would seem that the 6 vane tub would give better distribution for spinning than the 4 vane tub.

GE always made both freestanding and under-counter models start [ 1955-1972 ] to finish. The drum was changed from 4 baffles to six for better air movement during drying as there is no fan in any GE combo [ all were no vent condenser electric also ].
This should be a cool machine Jon congratulations on getting it, I was tempted to try and get it so I am glad you are getting it so when you tire of it I can get out of your way, LOL.

With as cold as Jon's tap cold water is, it should perform well with the drying. People who had these machines in Florida condos when the tap cold water in the summer was warm enough to bathe in reported miserable drying results with GE combos during that part of the year. The condos should have had a way to reclaim all of that condenser water for watering the grounds or topping off the pool or something.
Since Jon has those Unimatic machines as well as the Duomatics, he can run drying tests to compare the dry times for items extracted miserably in the GE combo and dried in it with drying times for the same load extracted in the Duomatics and the Frigidaires. We look forward to these reports once you get it operating, Jon. I think you will find it is a pretty fast dryer for well extracted loads.

YAY Jon!!! don't you have a FF that was like the one you grew up with? Now all you need is as dryer with that same console style and you'll have the whole laundryt stable-washer, combo, and dryer!!
Headed out tomorrow to get it.
Tom thanks for the information, 4 baffles that will be interesting indeed. Yes I'll try the drying tests once its up and running that should be fun.
I'm thinking this might be a '55 as it has black buttons not turquoise. We'll see.
Bob- I have had 3 of those '56 dryers go through my hands , they all ran way too hot! The last one was actually smoking the elastic in my clean undies! There was a cloud of smoke in the basement when I went down,kind of like when Robert set my '59 Frigidaire dryer on fire!
