Blackstone tranny oil leak

Hi all,

The old old Hoover top loader I got a little while back seems to have an oil leak from the transmission. The machine looks as though it hardly got much use over its life as the inside of the cabinet hardly had any oil splattered on it AT ALL.

It's been my apartment's washing machine for about 6 months and has been used at least a couple of times a week.

Recently I've had some pump problems, so removed and the front panel has been off. I've noticed that the almost zero oil splatter has increased to the point where you can run a line through it with your finger. I know that there is usually a bit of oil flung out as the tranny spins, but this seems to be getting worse quickly

Any advice? Think it's the gasket? Can the bolts be tightened? Should I ignore it?

I'm not sure this is 100% relevant, but your machine does bear a striking similarity to my '66 Blackstone BA600 and according to the service manual for that series of machines, the fault could be the pinion seal.  It doesn't look horribly difficult to replace (you would have to remove the tub and transmission unit to do so - this is not as bad as it sounds - honest!).    I can't say how easy (or difficult) it might be to find the Hoover version part, but a substitute may be available.

Full disclosure:  I knew absolutely nothing about Blackstone machines until I got this manual and that BA600 of mine is now one of my favourite washers!
