I understand "vintage" appliances aren't for everyone, but why, oh why, buy a place like this and tear out the kitchen?! I don't care if the house was a gimme, a place like this deserves a true owner-custodian. Look at that sink! The unused original DW, the pink laminate. The built-ins and original woodwork. Incredible, and really sad. Parted out or sold as a lot, they never go back together like the originals.

That GE oven is earlier than '62. I believe GE restyled their wall ovens in '59. My Mom's cousin Marie's house was built in '60, and had the newer style in tan, probably Woodtone Brown. It's very nice nevertheless.

The Pink C.I. sink top looks like it's probably by Crane. I have an early 60's Crane catalog, but it's at storage. Unusual to see it paired with wood cabinets instead of steel.

Too bad he's tearing it out, but better the items go to someone who will appreciate and care for them than to be disliked and neglected.

It's all new too. You don't need a 'new' kitchen because this is as period and as new as it gets.

I personally would leave it all as is, with the exception of the wall mounted refrigerator and wall oven.

I'd replace the fridge with a 56 Kelvinator Foodarama and the wall oven with a Western Holly oven both in the matching pink.

Cabinets, sink, floor, dishwasher, LIGHTING FIXTURE....I'd leave it all as is.

I still can't get over it. It's like a time capsule. Everything is new!

He needs to realize that this doesn't come along everyday and he needs to preserve the kitchen as it is.

We all know I don't like pink, but I am sick to my stomach this entire suite of a kitchen is being dismanteled and it was never used. What a waste!!! (P.S.) looks like that dishwasher had a custom made front to match the cabinetry???

I don't hold old in high regard just because it's old, sometimes junk is junk, but I question why he would buy the property just to dismantle it. There is a massive amount of property on the market at the moment, why buy what is a truly unique piece of history when there are other properties out there?

The one thing I don't get is the stainless steel dishwasher in the left corner of the kitchen, certainly not original.

In looking at some of the pictures enlarged it is obvious the kitchen had been used. the ref. has rust/grime along some of the seams and around the serial plate, and the original dishwasher looks to have discoloration on the racks. I guess the guy pulled out the original DW and put the new SS one in.

Here's what the website says...

And really, just because one owner decided to build a nice mid-century house and never live in it, doesn't mean that everyone can do the same. Would you all consider donating thousands of dollars to buy up such a house and preserve it as a museum? Yeah, personally I'd have kept the original appliances where possible (although that wall mounted fridge is probably a watt-guzzler).

There was a case of a couple who found a piece of property in a beautiful Chicago neighborhood, which contained at least three Frank Lloyd Wright houses. All of the houses were suited to their locations, beautiful in their own way, many different styles. Their property had a nice looking but not spectacular ranch on it. They of course had it flattened, to put up a two story house that would have been better suited to a brand new neighborhood. Of course there wasn't any other property as pristine or desirable to them as that, no other pretty property anywhere in Chicago or its suburbs.

Some people do get off on destroying nice things for their own personal visions. It would be different if it were so far gone that demolition was the only option.

I MUCH PREFER NEW CUSTOM KITCHENS

In the multitude of homes we have looked at there was one brand spankin' new kitchen laiden with Thermador & Bosche appliances that I would keep. I am not a trained chef, but a decent cook wants to have his kitchen set up a certain way. AND I need a gas stove.(say what you will)

HOWEVER

That kitchen is BEYOND so I might consider finding another room, perhaps in the basement, to build a modern custom kitchen for working. The other is such a show piece that it would be horrible to rip out...I certainly would have fun pretending to be Betty Draper in that kitchen.

Is the exact one my Mom has in her basement. Long story, but we lived in the basement for about 8 years. And yes, it's in PANK! And when there are burners on, a tiny little red light in the middle lights up to tell you that something's still turned on!

Hit the nail on the head, There are people out there that will buy a nice home or building only to deliberatly tear it down or mess it up so they can get the attention , Stay for a year or 2 then find something else to destroy.

They love it, They love to make people sad.

One of my biggest rants in St. Lucie County, Florida

The endless teardowns here. Everything torn down has not all been hurricane damaged. A giant virtually unused shopping structure was torn down to be replaced with a city center, many buildings in Fort Pierce have been destroyed to put up these ugly cracker style structures that seem to be the only accepted design. House remodeling consists of turning a nice old design into the latest 2010 mode, or like turning a contemporary into a hideous Spanish Hacienda. I get tired of hearing "the land is worth more than the building", true or not. This is not an era of beautiful design, stop slamming us with it.
