Who remembers that episode of the Brady Bunch when some director saw them in a parking lot or something and wanted to star them in a TV commercial for laundry detergent? What was that detergent name?

Safe Vs. Best

As I remember that episode, Carol gets the offer to do the commercial for "Safe"--but she tells Mike that she and Alice used "Best," and Mike says it may not be ethical to do the commercial. But then--surprise--Mike was told by the director (played by Paul Winchell) that a "new and improved" version of "Safe" came on the market. So it was a Brady wash-off--new "Safe" against "Best"--with the kids getting dirty and only Alice knowing which detergents were used. Actually it was two wash-offs, since Alice forgot which pile was which; but "Safe" was the winner and the Bradys did the ad. The rest you know.
One of these days, I really need to get a life!

Robert Reed was known to get upset over the writing on the Brady Bunch and would bring up something like "not ethical to do the commercial". But what would you expect from a Shakesperean actor?

The Ad

Actually, as I read the posts, it's getting more clear in my mind...Carol had a cousin named Myrna or something, who was an actress and she was coaching them. She tells Mike that he should be thinking about how white his shirts look when he's at the office, and Carol should be thinking, "wow, he brought me a box of that stuff!" When the director was disappointed, they said they were simply being motivated. The director called it off and commented to a cameraman or something, "this reminds of that bad actress, Myrna!"

Doris Day did it better, man!

I don't remember that episode, MikeS, but it sounds like a semi-copy of my favorite detergent movie: "The Thrill of It All" with Doris Day and James Garner...

Of course, considering Florence Henderson was all over the place with her Tang and "Wessonality" ads in the 60s and 70s--and, of course, her Polident ads today--she would have made the perfect "housewife" for the Brady ad!

And don't forget that "Bewitched" episode where Aunt Clara accidentally zapped up Napoleon Bonaparte for Darrin's client, "Zoom" detergent...

or the "Beverly Hillbillies" episode where Jed and Granny are recruited to do a detergent commercial, but Granny still prefers her homemade lye soap!
