A good face soap with plenty of moisturizer (like Dove or even Lever 2000) works pretty well as a shaving creme.

At least, in the shower for the periphery of the beard, that is.

Second pass of razor (shaving up) with soap.

It is a near compulsion. Of course at my age I never used a home-made lather and shaving brush exclusively.
Now where on earth did that habit come from?

My father used an electric razor. [Sarcastically: I cant tell you how lovley that sounds at 6:30am EVERY, morning. As well as the ritual tapping, smacking and brushing of it to clean it.] My grandfather, even, used a shaving cream; Gillette IIRC.

Norelco

Being the Sunbeam addict, I was in my early years, my first razor was a Sunbeam. It had a great case and I worshipped the logo, but much a bull with one horn and one testicle, all it could do was beller and pee. As my beard and maturity grew I switched to Norelco, which actually cut the beard and did not burn the skin. I have bumpy follicals and safety shaving gives me a million little bloody bumps. Electric shaving leaves little hairs behind. I use the best of both worlds, an electric shaver and a touch up with a dry (Yeouch) Gillette triple something er other. I whack the Gillette on the sink to loosen the nubs and I am good to go with less mess and using less water, which is not only good for the Salmon, but every teapsoon I save shaving can be a gallon in my WASHING MACHINE!

If you can find it, get a Remington Face Saver stick. This is a block of compressed powder you rub on your face before hitting it with the electric shaver. You'll have to clean your shaver more often, but it's totally worth it.

True, but why go through all that when the Braun does it just fine without the extra powder and stuff?

For a while Remington used to sell foil razors saying "Closer than a blade or your money back." Whatever happened to that? Now they're in the rotary crowd.

Rotary razors do work well, just not on me.

My personal experience is that electric razors do not perform very well on heavy beards. It took me every morning a lot of time to shave when I used an electric razor. A wet shave is much faster and at least I don't have to stand all that noise early in the morning.

Louis, you'd be surprised how quiet the new Philips Speed XL is, almost too quiet which makes me think there isn't much of anything inside the plastic case. But so far I'm very impressed with it. You can rinse the head and blades under the faucet but I haven't tried that yet. It's made in Holland still.

I used to have a Norelco (I think) 3-head electric shaver. My face hair grows in fast and thick, and eventually it clogged and broke the poor thing. Currently I'm using an old-fashioned adjustable razor with a double-edge blade. Very close shave--just don't press too hard!

Remington still "makes" foil razors-Guess those are made in China as well.Their foil shaver doesn't come with the clean and charge unit.I have gotten to really like those clean and charge units-very nice-a clean razor for each shave.I think it helps keep the blades sharp longer.The cleaning solutiuon also has a lubricant in it to lube the blades in between shaves.

When I was in college, decades ago, I bought an old fashioned shaving soap brush and mug. At that time you could still find little round cakes of shaving soap you'd drop in the bottom of the cup. It was my impression that this worked just as well as aerosol canned lather, and of course it was much more ecologically friendly.

Of course, one hasn't lived until one has had thir sideburns trimmed by a barber college student with a straight razor...

Pete, I know the newer Philishaves are much more silent than the older ones. But I still don't like the noise in the morning, especially because it takes rather long to get a good shave.

Here's the shaving cream I mentioned earlier. You only need very little of it. One container gets you months and months of shaving.

Some of those Norelco/PHilips rotarys are quiet, you can hear it cutting (pulling) the hair out of their follicles.

Unfortunately, mine ain't quiet. It's the familiar BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. The clean and charge isn't much better.

I guess I'm phobic of trying to shave manually. I tried it once and cut myself so I don't really have any intention of trying again. Yes, I'm weird.

My impression is that people who are used to an electric razor are often pressing the razorblade to hard on the skin when they shave manually. You just barely need to touch the skin, especially with a new blade. And you must stretch the skin before every stroke.
