any of you all remember these record players? those were the big ones that practically every school had. I remember the big, full sound those things made filling the classroom with sound. Those things had to be tough, to withstand the rigors by the kids!
I picked up a nice model 1155 at a yard sale this past weekend. It's a stereo model where the two speakers are actually the top cover for the turntable part. This one's actually a little newer than the ones I remember my school having. The monural ones my school used had a chrom mesh speaker grill in the front with very tiny holes, and the dials were located in the middle of the grill. I believe they were vacuum tube too. Quite suprising considering I went to school in the 80's. It will need a little work, seems that the tire that drives the turntable platter is a little worn, and doesn't really have enough traction to keep it moving at speed. The turntable has a speed control on it, and I've got it turned all the way up to run it at the proper speed at 33. 45 RPM does not play fast enough
The speakers are big 6x9's with the little tweeter cone in the middle, and a pretty big magnet on the back. I noticed that the stereo models don't quite have quite as bassy of a sound as the monoural ones had. I imagine that is because the mono ones have the speaker built into the bottom of the case, where it can use the entire wooden case as the speaker cabinet. The speakers in the stereo models, like the one I found are open in the back, and the cabinets are minimal. Likewise, the turntable still sounds good, and will give my big hi-fi stereo a run for it's money on cranking out lots of loud music! There's even a microphone jack, but I haven't tried it yet!
Here's one on E-bay in nice shape similar to the one I bought, but this one is in a bit better condition!
