any of you all remember these record players? those were the big ones that practically every school had. I remember the big, full sound those things made filling the classroom with sound. Those things had to be tough, to withstand the rigors by the kids!

I picked up a nice model 1155 at a yard sale this past weekend. It's a stereo model where the two speakers are actually the top cover for the turntable part. This one's actually a little newer than the ones I remember my school having. The monural ones my school used had a chrom mesh speaker grill in the front with very tiny holes, and the dials were located in the middle of the grill. I believe they were vacuum tube too. Quite suprising considering I went to school in the 80's. It will need a little work, seems that the tire that drives the turntable platter is a little worn, and doesn't really have enough traction to keep it moving at speed. The turntable has a speed control on it, and I've got it turned all the way up to run it at the proper speed at 33. 45 RPM does not play fast enough

The speakers are big 6x9's with the little tweeter cone in the middle, and a pretty big magnet on the back. I noticed that the stereo models don't quite have quite as bassy of a sound as the monoural ones had. I imagine that is because the mono ones have the speaker built into the bottom of the case, where it can use the entire wooden case as the speaker cabinet. The speakers in the stereo models, like the one I found are open in the back, and the cabinets are minimal. Likewise, the turntable still sounds good, and will give my big hi-fi stereo a run for it's money on cranking out lots of loud music! There's even a microphone jack, but I haven't tried it yet!

Here's one on E-bay in nice shape similar to the one I bought, but this one is in a bit better condition!

Here's one like I remember our school having

This is almost the exact same record player, except for the fact that it does not have a tone control on it. I'm gonna hafta bid on this one!

I have a blue ('70s?) mono Califone, and I love it. It's built like a tank. I got it off eBay before I went to college. Califone is still in business, but they only sell to schools/institutions and not consumers.

Yes!! I remember those great Caliphone record players.also the ones that were similar by a company called Newcomb. In the schools I attended-saw and heard, used examples of both.Would love to run into one.The one I esp remember is a Caliphone mono unit(one speaker that was in a sealed baffle in the lid)The speaker unit removed from the top of the machine and was the cover when the player wasn't in use.It had a large 10 or 12" speaker with a chrome grille and served as the big letter "C" in the name Caliphone. Sounded so good.Would be great for those radio station record hops. The Newcomb unit I saw and heard was stereo-and used by the square dance caller at the square dance club we went to when I was little. It was a large portable unit-two 12" speakers,a TT amp-mixer unit.the caller plugged his mike into it and a tape recorder he used as well. Was a great sounding setup.Wish I could get the pictures of those from my mind!!Both Newcomb and Caliphone(Newcomb is no longer with us)were large makers of commercial PA and sound equipment.

Heard of these folks before-thay had an office in the Wash DC area at one time-the radio station I worked at-we ordered cartridges and Stylus from them. From the link-they have a TT for anyone-including the Caliphones!!The Numark,Stanton, are also used in radio stations and mobile music DJ's.Looks like they have grown!!-they used to sell cartridges and Styli before. They also had a small supply of tonearms, and tonearm parts.
