calling all Speed Queen experts

Good morning all, I have a 1989 Speed Queen Rayathon built. Yesterday was wash day. I had 2 loads to wash, both done on the regular cycle. The first load ran fine no problems. When I did the second load the washer ran fine until the rinse cycle. It filled up with rinse water, rinsed but it continued through the final spin to the off position. When i went to put the load into the dryer, the washer was full of water. No matter what cycle I turned it to machine was dead as a door nail. So I spun the clothes in another machine and drained the machine manually what a mess. After I finished up I turned the selector to spin and it took right off. So I decided to run a small load of rugs, the machine ran the whole cycle without any problems. Any suggestions as to what's going on?

out of balance switch might have been tripped, and didn't align back up when you opened the lid....sometimes they get a little stuck....

it is part of the lid switch in the front right corner.....a unique setup

check its alignment/recentering, and may need a bit of lubrication....

with the front off and the machine running in spin, reach in and trip it as an unbalanced load, the machine should shut off, lifting the lid should allow it to jump back in place and allow you to restart the machine....

the only other thing I could think of is the motor may have overheated.....

My guess is the timer fried.

a couple of more questions

The lid switch has be by passed so i can run the machine with the lid open all the time. If the motor was fried why would the machine start back up? If the motor was overheated does that mean it's about ready to go?

I by-passed my switch as well, but yeah, if the OOB switch tripped, you basically had to open the front to reset it....one of the oddities if you by-pass that switch....

one of the weak spots on these machines was the pump, I would check for free movement of the pump, as its belt driven, and could be binding up, causing the motor to overheat....

is this a 2port or 4port pump design?

for the most part, if the motor was shot, it wouldn't start up....also have seen motors that would start with an empty load, but once applied pressure, would cut out....

hi Martin, It is a 4 port design and I just replaced the pump with a brand new one 6 months ago. Also both belts have been replaced. I wonder if it was just a rare happening. I'll give it another try, the last load of rugs ran fine through the whole cycle. any other suggestions? Thanks for your help.

well, for now, run it and see how it goes...could be just a one time fluke...

the thing with those 4 port pumps, is it recirculates water back onto the load during spin, which can sometimes put a drag on the transmission/belt/motor...plus cause the belt to chew up sooner than expected....

it wouldn't have this issue if the port came from the side of the outter tub instead of the bottom.....

I ended up pinching off the hose, cured my issue on many problems.....not that the rimflo filter was a huge asset....

all the more reason why models after these had a two port pump....

Just an update washed clothes yesterday and the machine ran fine through the cycles, must have just wanted to throw a fit, Alls well now.
