Calling Eddie (ea56): Whirlpool Dishwasher Failure

Well, right on cue at 10 months of age, my portable Whirlpool dishwasher leaked about a gallon of water all over the kitchen floor this morning. Don't think it is coming from the pump; my guess is it's coming from wherever the inlet hose connects inside the machine.

At any rate, I brought in a freshly-dried loads of bath towels from the laundry, saw the flood and laid them all out on the floor. I was worried that some of it might have gotten into the furnace/AC vent on the floor, but no.

So does every dishwasher of this model develop problems at exactly 10 months?!

I’m sorry to here that your Whirlpool dishwasher has crapped out at 10 mo. too. The service tech that repaired mine told me that there was a servive bullitin on several WP DW’s, but that mine wasn’t on the list. But just to be sure, he ordered and replaced the intire motor assembly that fit in under the filter on the floor of the DW. Of course your problem is diferrent than mine with the leaking you are experiencing.

I’m sorry now that I recommended this DW, but at the time I did so, I really was very pleased with it. I hope that you can get yours repaired soon. But, maybe, in the interim you will also rediscover that hand washing dishes has its positive points too, like I did. Even though my DW was repaired over 6 weeks ago, I still haven’t used it, and I don’t miss using it either. I like getting chores done all at once, and detest having to unload a dishwasher later on, when I’m busy doing something else. Different storkes for different folks as they say, LOL.

Having made a batch of chocolate streusel muffins for my coworkers as well as egg salad for sandwiches, I loaded the Whirlpool and pressed start. Have been keeping a close eye on it. No leaks at this point. It is now in the third sequence of the cycle (the main wash). Two fill/action/drain sequences to go, the final rinse being the longest portion of the cycle.

I use only the 1-hr. cycle, which always does an excellent job of cleaning.

Everything sounds and appears normal. Of course that was true this morning, too, when the major leak occurred.

I always used the 1 hr. cycle too, that was the top feature that attracted me to this model. And as long as I loaded it carfully, everything got satisfactorily clean. They are very good dishwashers, especially for the price.

Good luck with your trial run, hope the leak was fluke, but I’d keep an eye on it, the leak could return unexpectedly , unless you are able to locate the source and fix the problem, as I’m sure you already know.

Good news, Eddie. Cycle completed: Not a drop of water on the floor. I choose to assume some weird fluke occurred this morning to cause the flooding issue. I never leave the apartment when the dishwasher is in use, so if the fluke occurs again, at least I'll be around to deal with it. This is good, because I have an incredibly busy six weeks ahead of me with work and had no idea how I could be home to let the servicer in during regular business hours to make repairs. Sigh of relief.

Good to hear that you had no leaks this time. It might be a good idea to have someone come and check the machine when you have the time to be home for a service call. If there was an overfill incident or a leak from the water system once, it will likely happen again and you'll have it on record with WP even if the servicer cannot find anything obviously wrong. Once it's out of warranty, you're stuck with the problem.
