Caloric DUS104-19 Issues

Hi, just joined. Love the site... I redid my kitchen several years ago with vintage appliances (a Sub Zero fridge, Tappan Fabulous 400 stove and this Caloric dishwasher). Everything's been pretty status quo since then, but I've been out of my place for 3 months while they did a bathroom remodel and when I came back my dishwasher didn't work anymore. It powers on when you turn the knob, but it doesn't pull water in. I've been told it's probably the pump. There's a slim possibility it's the valve leading into the dishwasher... I'm in the New York City area. Any recommendations for a repair person?

I'd say it sounds more like the water inlet valve - if you hear the machine start up right away, that's the wash/drain pump.  Is it possible that the water supply pipe to the dishwasher was altered or shut off because of the bathroom remodel?  Don't laugh, but I lived in a house where the hot water line to the bathroom had been tapped into in order to connect a dishwasher - when the hot line got shut off to the bathroom, the water to the dishwasher was also shut off!

A dishwasher's pump doesn't pull water into the machine.  Fill is through an inlet valve via household water mains pressure.  The pump comes into play to circulate/spray the water onto the dishware after it has filled in.

while you can.  D&M dishwashers like this one are not known to last long.  And the problem is likely the inlet valve.

I would definitely put my money on either the contractors shut the water off to the machine, or disconnected the water supply to the machine or even maybe a clogged water valve. I doubt there is anything wrong with the machine especially if it was working before the renovation. These old D&M machines were built well.

Thank you for all the input! It was my opinion that it was the valve too, but the contractor's plumber said it wasn't clogged... I'm not so sure. The building handyman came up and looked too and he said the valve to the dishwasher was leaking a little. It made me think that perhaps when they moved the hot water shutoff valve (it was in a closet, they moved it to under the bathroom sink - the bathroom and kitchen share shutoffs, they're backed up against each other) it knocked some sediment loose that lodged in the dishwasher valve? Does that sound possible? The hot water to the sink works fine, but the dishwasher valve stems off the line for the sink.

It does sound like something happened to the water supply

When you start the dishwasher are you hearing the humming sound of the valve just to be sure make sure nothings underneath the float holding it up in the bottom of the tank.

It does sound like you have a valve problem just the shock of turning on and off the water to an old inlet valve in a DM dishwasher could be enough to ruin it so you may need a new inlet valve at this point don’t try to fix the old valve or clean it unless you have a good flood insurance.

Install a new valve, if you can’t get one for a DNM dishwasher you can use a KitchenAid valve 4171000 will fit

Most Kenmore dishwashers were made by D&M until about the mid 80s, usually they did not last long and that is why Sears sold so many dishwashers.  Then they started to source some machines from Whirlpool and they were much better.  Most D&M dishwashers have long been recycled/to the landfill long ago.
