Andrew and Glenn,

Again, thank you for your help.

I got the basket out, I'm not as good as Glenn though, I had to cut my spanner nut into 4 pieces:-). I'm iffy about it, so here is a video my wife helped me make to show where what I'm looking at. Let me know what you think.

Look at what else I found

This may have been the problem all along. I was cleaning the basket up and it looks like the nut that holds the spin assembly in place is broken. So, it looks like I am buying a basket. That sucks because unless I find a deal like I got on the balance ring, it may be a few weeks until I can raise the funds.

My hub has the same split. I assumed it's made that way, but looking closer now it does appear to be cracked. I could open up my other Calypso for a look, but I'd rather not, at least not until I get the current one finished!

Per your video, the hub should not be loose and movable. Unfortunately the hub is not separately replaceable far as I know, I've not seen it listed at any parts sites and there's probably not a field-tool for handling the nut. You could check with a parts supplier on the embossed number to be sure, but you'll likely have to get the entire basket. Yes, it sucks 'cause the baskets aren't cheap, and it's a point of concern with both of our machines having this problem. It'll be interesting to find how well they last after being refurbished and used with care.

As for CalypsNo ... Whirlpool made some errors in the design (and took a hit on their reputation), but the machines are what they are. I imagine Robert and Greg and Jimmy and many others have spent large amounts of fundage refurbishing/rebuilding and maintaining their collections.

Nice video Jackson,

Your wife did an excellent job of filming. I'll look at my basket nut after I get the u-joint off and see if mine is cracked too. I'll bet a newspaper classified section is good place to find a Calypso washer for sale cheap. You could keep the basket and part the rest out.

Neptune Bob

Something I have learned while working on this machine. It is actually a very simple mechanism. I think the early machines had some problems. The later machines seem to be better, but by the time the kinks were worked out the damage to the reputation was done. It reminds me of the Chevy Vega. The early ones had a terrible engine, then they were fixed and the later ones were little tanks. But, by the time GM fixed it, it was too late for the car. I think of this machine as a future classic, and also, I only paid $20 for it. I have already gotten that much fun out of it just taking it apart and working on it. So far, in parts, I have a total of $150 invested.

I've been bitten by the bug, I want to get this one finished, so I can get a vintage to work on.

The split in the hub is normal. Mine looks the same way. The hub is not, however, separate from the basket. It's designed to be a single piece. The nut itself, however, is cracked.

Andrew, to clarify, your hub is not "cracked" thusly? I'm 99.99999% sure mine was already cracked when I disassembled and pulled the basket for clean-up. My picture of the the hub before clean-up vaguely shows a crack (filled with debris) toward the left front at about "7 PM." After clean-up it's clearly visible toward the back right at about "1 PM." I thought it was designed that way, until I saw Jackson's and see that the split is not machined smoothly.

Glenn -

That's what I was trying to say in my post, albeit not too well!! The crack you point to in your diagram indeed should not be there...the nut is cracked in that photo. The splits in the spline are normal.

Interesting, it appears that ours are cracked in the same place.

Glenn, when are you expecting your new basket?
