Calypso update

Been having some financial challenges, due to the plumbing and HVAC in my house going FUBAR, so the Calypso has had to take a back seat.

I went into a used appliance store that just opened in Millington and asked if he had any used Calypso parts. He told me that he could do better. He has an entire machine, the control board is out, and I can have it for $60. I'm going to go pick it up today. It is a white Kenmore version just like what I have.

I'm hoping between the two, I can make one good machine.

YES! FINALLY! You could probably make a good machine by swapping out the control board on your broken Calypso with the one on the good Calypso with dead control board. Put the dead control board on the broken Calypso and put the dead Calypso on the curb. Good Bye and Good Riddance!

The Whirlpool version of the machine is different than the Kenmore version of the machine. Not sure the circuit boards are interchangeable. The cyles themselves are somewhat different between the two machines, even though some of the labels are similar.

Check it out though, you never know. I don't have a Kenmore repair manual to know for certain what the differences are.

they are both Kenmore, but I got the other one home, plugged it in, and it is working perfectly. Other than being dirty, I there was nothing wrong with it. I have cleaned it, and it is running a load now.

The motor controller boards are interchangeable, far as I've been told. The machine controller boards, maybe, I've seen them on eBay touted as for both. The control panels (touch boards) are a different button arrangement of course but perhaps the same electrically?

Mechanically, Kenmore & Whirlpool should be identical, except for cosmetic differences such as the wash dome.

My GVW9959KL0 (platinum color, manuf'd 10th week of 2001) seems to have a stronger recirculation flow than my GVW9959KQ1 (white, manuf'd 41st week of 2001) ... although both have the original style pump (separate motor and pump, the newer style is a one-piece motor/pump). I replaced the KQ1's recirculation tube, maybe something is different there between the two.

Yeah, Glenn, I noticed in your videos that that machines has a very strong recirc function, stronger than my Kenmore's, even though it's the same pump.

Jax - you got lucky!! Clean it up, and use it in good health!

Thank you. I got behind on the family's laundry and it has been running almost continuousy since I got it home. I just put the last load in. It is running flawlessly except for one thing. It leaves some water in the softner dispenser. I can live with that.

Could you post some videos and pics of the machine running? I want to see the Kenmore Elite version of the machine running. Also, what did you do with the DD Kenmore?

Jax - mine leaves a little water in the softener dispenser, too, sometimes. It's not a big deal at all. When I use softener, I use only about 1 Tbsp of any concentrated softener. Seems to be all you need for a big load.

Well, at least you have a full set of parts for it!

I really love my new calypso set. Use it more than I thought I would.

About the water thing, somtimes our Kenmore Oasis leaves a small amount of water in the Liquid Chlorine Bleach dipenser at the end of the cycle. The instruction manual says this is completly normal.

Andrew,

Couldn't be happier with the machine. I have done 9 loads in it, and it couldn't have performed better. It is now installed in the laundry room. The first couple of loads were done in the garage with a garden hose attached to it and the drain going into a large trash can.

I will get some pics tonight, and some vids as soon as I rig the lid switch.

I'm going to take the other machine apart, keep some parts and get rid of the rest.

What about the DD Kenmore the Calypso replaced? Did you keep it in case the Calypso goes Collapso again or did you sell it or what?

The DD is in the garage. I'm planning on selling it at a yard sale we are having in two weeks. I'm on the prowl for the matching dryer.

And the exterior. Poor dear, she was really, really filty, and had duct tape all over the lid.

Keep all the serviceable parts from the spare machine -- drive motor, pump/motor, u-joint, balance ring, water valve, circuit boards, line filter, splash shields, etc. Even the front panel, lid, and top. Never know when something may be needed!

Jackson - see if you can replace the splash shield that runs along the inside of tub that is supposed to seal up against the balance ring of the tub. In your pic you posted, the shield looks all wavy and warped. When that machine is washing, any water that gets under that shield can wind up leaking over the top of the tub, hitting the bottom pan of the machine, causing it to rust quickly. If the one on your other machine is in good condition, just swap them. In your pic, it doesn't look like it seals against the tub's balance ring. When that machine is washing, water is splashing pretty violently under the lid.

I looked at the splash shield on the other machine, and it is perfect. I'll try to work out the time to switch them out this weekend.

My wife (who was skeptical) was helping me fold the mountain of laundry that we did last weekend. She admitted that she could tell which that were washed in the Calypso. She said that they felt "cleaner" and were less wrinkled.
