Can you install an electric dryer upside down?

Say one of the smaller units with front controls. Mounted like an upper cabinet in a kitchen, done so upside down to make the controls more accessible. Actually it would make the drum a bit more accessible too it would seem.

The dryer sits on glides or wheels, which would be in the wrong spot if inverted. I remember a guy that did something similar one time, but he removed the entire console and rerouted the harness to a lower spot. Read: Frankenstein

Fisher and Paykel did have dryers that allowed upside down mounting. They even supplied a new upside down facia sticker...

if your going through all the trouble, why not just get a TL or FL stacked set.....

most likely less headaches installing that trying to find one to mount upside down, finding studs to mount it to, plus venting issues...

capacity could be another issue.....

theres several styles and setups...although I would stick with the agitator model

not that specific model becaus ethe lint filter would never stop where it should be. Every time you open the door it would fall.

Upside down, Down Under

I lived in Australia for a while and saw lots of 'upside down' wall mounted dryers there. They were really easy to operate and load / unload being at a better height. It was common to have them above a top loading washing machine, just above the height of where the lid of the top loader opened to.

I'm not sure if they were built differently or not.

I'm sure someone from Oz will have more info .....

Only if if is specifically made to be installed USD.

 

The 1957-63 Westinghouse Space-Mates were probably the first and only US Dryers that were built to do this.

If you paid attention to safety, it shouldn't be that big a deal. Do you have a specific model in mind?

Any domestic Branded Australian Dryer can be mounted upside down.

The first image is an Aussie dryer.

Those type of dryers here have glides top and bottom around the drum. They run on a central bearing at the back and either Felt, Kevlar or Plastic glides at the front.

The lint filters that mount into the rim of the frame clip in, so they dont fall out when they're upside down.

These were the norm here until domestic manufacturing ended and the market was overtaken by Euro dryers.

When I lived in Australia I rented several apartments that had wall mounted Simpson dryers that were effectively upside down. The control panel could be flipped over. Obviously they were only compact size machines but a very good idea!
