Yesterday when I came home I heard lots of noise from around the corner. I placed my shoppings in the kitchen and went out. The first thing I saw was the backside of people standing along the waterfront...
The annual Canal Parade was about to begin. Here we have the boat of the mail service in the Netherlands. No national pride anymore. It has been privatised...
Now here is something that we can be proud of: it's the boat of the city of Amsterdam. The boat is named "Schelto Patijn" a former Amsterdam mayor who has done much for the emancipation of homosexuality and who sadly died last month...
Great pictures Theo, looks like a lot of fun. I really should be coming over to Amsterdam next year to see the Canal Parade. But I've promised myself that before. LOL
Nice pictures didn't know we have members living in amsterdam... never been to prides before... maybe next time, dunno it's antwerp or brussels but then I have to finde that guy that's nice enough to go with me
Nice Maybe like the commercials of witte reus compact... wast een berg kost een beetje (I will translate but I think this is hillarious; White compact giant... washes more, costs less) A sudsparty that's nice with lines filled with clothes
These pictures were taken at the start of the parade. The participants are still full of energy. My pictures were taken at the end of the route, some four hours later, and the weather was hot so most participants were more standing than dancing.
Very fun picture, thanks for sharing them Theo. Now that looks like a fun pride festival to see. Is there a specific reason for having Amersterdam pride the first weekend in August, does it symbolize anything?
Thanks Theo for the link. It sure looks like a wonderful Pride Day!
Robert,
In the Netherlands we have actually two Pride Days. One is held on the last Saturday in June and is organised nowadays in a different city every year. This one has to do ofcourse with the riots at the Stonewall Inn. It's called "Roze Zaterdag" (Pink Saturday). The official first one was in 1979 but in 1977 and in 1978 also demonstrations were held. The very first gay demonstration in the Netherlands was in 1969.
The Canal Parade is part of Amsterdam Pride. Amsterdam Pride was organised for the first time in 1996 by a group of gay business owners who found that Amsterdam needed it's own Pride Day (weekend actually). It's held in August because they didn't want to compete with the "Roze Zaterdag". Too small a country to organise two of those events on the same day.
