Here a short presentation of the new Candy Simply|Fi, the only appliance's range that speaks to you with wi-fi and a simple app. Is it the beginning of a revolution?

Almost all manufacturers are playing around with WiFi and smart home stuff at this stage.

Samsung has had products on the market for some time already and even Miele has stepped into the frame.

The risk is that these could be gimmicks and I think that's why Miele is being very cautious. Where as Samsung's all about LEDs, displays and information technology, Miele are all about functionality and mechanical engineering.

Wi-Fi-Smartphone aps-Look,I just want the washer to wash clothes, dishwasher to do the dishes-I don't need these machines to surf the net.My computer and IPad can do that and do that job better.Don't need to control the machines that Gee Wiz way-knobs,dials, and switches are fine for me!

My Car does not need WiFi streaming audio, my Stove does not need a Touch screen running Android 4.2, My washer does not need a Bluetooth interface, my dishwasher does not need LAN printing support. Now, a Version of OBDII for my appliances would be nice, but I would not want the cost or complexity the makers would build in.

I, personally, don't see the need for WiFi compatibility on household appliances. I want them to work reliably and don't need additional complexity there. Also, I've really no interest in controlling my appliances from another room - it isn't a hardship to, y'know, walk into the kitchen.

A friend has an LG machine with NFC control via smartphone, but it won't work with any of the phones in their household - her words were that it's a pretty pointless gimmick unless you're prepared to spend a fortune to upgrade phone just for sake of talking to your washer.

On the other hand, if someone could invent a robot vacuum cleaner that could also do stairs and be controlled by phone, I might be more interested :-)

Aren't those called Children? :D

That's a fair point, and I have two of them already. They actually don't mind hoovering too much, which is good.
