Car turn signals?

This might just be a silly thread. But when I was a kid, I used to really be intrigued by the turn signals in the car. Something about that old tick-tock, tick-tock relay sound and the flashing green arrows I really liked.

Also in videos on TV that had people driving, I liked hearing it too.

I always wanted one of those toys that was like a car steering wheel that had turn signals and things.

Even now I do kind of like hearing that tick tock sound when I drive. Though most cars now, like mine are a computer generated bloop-blop bloop-blop than a real tick-tock relay.

all the cars I have or had in the past all used the thermal flashers except one:the 1987 Russian made Lada Signet 1500 had an electronic flasher,,, Don't wnow when all cars came with turn signals,but I know they were still optional on early 1950s Chevrolets.

I notice with some of the more modern cars, that the indicator audible signalling is actually inaudible over the tyre noise.

That probably explains why you see folk driving along the road with the indicator flashing merrily away.

Almost all domestic turn signal flashers into the 90's were plugged into the fuse block. They did wear out and then it flashed way slower and you'd have to climb under the dashboard and replace that. Old one was loud click, new one is always much quieter but flashes right on the dashboard indicators.

Judging by the way most people drive these days... Do they still have written and road tests ?

Latest thing here at least on the Cape is just look at the red light as you're rolling through it.

No need to stop anymore. They're probably in a hurry.

New thing here is a stantion in the middle of the road at crosswalks. There is picture of a STOP sign on it with the warning to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk. God help you if you are behind an immigrant driver who knows what STOP means but cannot read the rest of the message. They will wait there until hell freezes over or enough horns sound behind them. It's the same if you are behind one of them at a right on red intersection. They learn the passing answers for the exam, but not the text of the regulations.

Add on unit

We had a 1952 Chevrolet De Luxe sedan and my dad added on a turn signal unit similar to the picture. It had a small rubber wheel that rubbed against the steering wheel to allow the unit to cancel after a turn. Other than that you had to use hand signals. Oh, and this car had push button start. Not a PowerGlice car had three on the column. No radio.

My favorite turn signals are on the Mustang, sequential. Concept came from the mid 1960's Mercury Cougar.

It seems 90% of the newer cars don't come with them. And I've noticed, the higher end the car, the less likelyhood that it has turn signals. Anyone else notice this?

I’ve noticed this for years now.  Police cars seem to lack this feature quite often too.

 

I got my drivers license back when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, LOL.  I had to demonstrate hand and arm signals when it took my behind the wheel drivers license test.  My parents also always used hand and arm signals in heavy traffic along with the turn signal.  They thought you could never be too careful about letting other drivers know your intentions. To this day, if I’m in heavy stop and go traffic on the freeway I still roll down the window and use the hand signal for stop.  I think it may have saved me from being rear ended a few times.

It seems like we have gone full circle and turn signals became an option that nobody wants anymore, lol.

I've also nearly gotten rear ended a few times because I actually stop at red lights but now glance at the rear view mirror and prepared to sail on through if I'm being tailed by a driver that's not paying attention.

Happen to be on of those weirdos that drives the speed limit, too.

Perhaps I need my license revoked.

I have a '50 Plymouth that lacks turn signals. I have resisted installing an aftermarket turn signal device for a few reasons. Mainly, it's a six volt positive ground car, and I'd have to rewire in four locations. Since the old wiring is cloth covered I'd be a little worried that the work would short it out, and then we're talking new wiring harness anyway. Then there is upgrading the light sockets front and rear. Plus I don't know if the aftermarket turn signal device will work on a six volt positive ground system anyway.

 

So I just roll down the window and use my arm. Since I drive the car mostly in mild weather, not a big deal, except the sometimes the window crank binds. Need to take a look at that.
