Does anyone remember when a neighbor got an new refrigerator or washer, and then the next day the box would be on the curb and we kids would take it? It was especially cool when this happened during the winter, we could take it and fully loaded with fun kids, slide down the hills of a forestry preserve that led to our hilly back yard. Way, way better than a sled or toboggan. Nothing better than a blind refigerator box filled with kids sliding down a hill with trees and rocks to hit for added danger. I do think we had a peek hole in the front. OH WHAT FUN! Disposable sledding and cardboard false security!

I made a fort out of old fridge, dishwasher and stove boxs thanks to the wonderful people at lowes..When ever we;d go there, i ask if i could get one and usualy it was a yes...When we lvied in the old house before the basment was finished (and even after) i had like 15 or so box's taped together and made into a neat fort..But it got ruined when the sewer pipes burst... Oh I was devestaed...But then grams bought me a $300 tent and that was even better..
I also used some pieces to sled down the hills beside the cematary where we lived. Also used a well oiled dumpster lid (used 2 cans of pam) that was found, and other stuff..

We used to take the refrigerator boxes and a few of us kids would crawl side by side inside of them. We would call it "the bulldozer" and would crush the weeds down in the empty field across the street. When we got bored with that,we would play baseball and kickball in the "cleared" area of the field.

Ahhh the memories, we used to get so excited when the boxes hit the street just prior to council junk collection day. In our neighbourhood, the local council had quartly junk round up, it constantly surprised me how much fabbo stuff used to turn up... Boxes were a particular favorite... I will never forget grabing the dishwasher/ fridge/ washing machine boxes and heading down to the local catholic primary school, grass slide down the hill behind the oval... brilliant steep hill that was never mown .... and then getting chased off by the grumpy old nuns. Once when one of the nuns managed to catch my dopey brother she dragged him by his ear up the hill and proceeded to frog march him to our parents house... Mum was MORTIFIED, we were forbidden to go near "that" school EVER again, but that threat didnt stop us !!!(we are lapsed Anglican & Ma & Pa had a particular dislike of the "Cathos")

Oh, I can still remember making a fort out of the refrigerator box in like 1967! (It was a coppertone Coldspot, by the way, and still working over 30 years later.)

Anyone notice that a lot of appliances are just shrinkwrapped with styrofoam bumpers? Sad, sad, sad...
