Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Hiya.

Depends which Carlton you mean.

Carlton was the brand name used by Currys, through the 1980s.

The earliest Carlton branded machine I know existed was the Carlton A3C16 Electronic 1100, which was made for Currys by Hoover and based on their A3110 Electronic 1100.

I have never seen a proper piccy of this machine - it is one of the few machines, manufactured by Hoover for the UK market, that I havent been able to find trace of.
If anyone can supply a piccy of this machine I REALLY REALLY REALLY would be grateful!

I do have two pictures which give an idea as to what it probably looked like.

The first is in the Hoover factory, with a bloke putting together a facia for an early 1980s Hoover machine.
The facia is from the A3110 series, but styled like no other machine I have seen of this ilk.

This is probably a facia for an A3C16, but dont know for sure...

The other piccy I have of a possible A3C16 is the famous 'Secret Life of the Washing Machine' tower.

Second row from top on the left and there is a square door Hoover machine, bearing the facia shown in the picture above.

As I say - anyone able to supply a proven image of the A3C16 - I would be really grateful.

A further note is that, to the best of my knowledge, Currys never commissioned any manufacturer to poduce them a tumble dryer.

The first mention of Carlton in the 'Which' magazine occurred in the April 1981 washer report.

They state:

Carlton
Own brand of Currys. Four machines in their range: one made by Hoover the others made in Italy.

The models were:

Carlton Automatic £190
Carlton Electronic £220
Carlton Electronic 1100 De Luxe £280 (A3C16)
Carlton Washer Dryer £300

Info from 'Which' May 1982 shows that the A3C16 has been discontinued and that...

'Current models are made in Italy and dont have wheels or castors. Neither washer has a matching tumble dryer'

... with the models being the Automatic, Electronic and CC1181 MkII Washer Dryer.

The only Carlton I ever saw was the famous washer dryer - model 800WD from circa 1983, a piccy of which is shown below...

With the Carlton Washer dryer being made by San Giorgio, it might be safe to assume that the machine on the left of this picture formed the basis of the Carlton Automatic, whilst the machine on the right formed the basis of the Carlton Electronic.

Might be wrong though, so any confirmation, memories or images would be really interesting to see or read about.

Cheers
Paul

I remember a neighbour having a carlton machine in 1984, large chrome door, 500rpm, brown facia with two buttons and one dial, have a feeling it was a Littlewoods exclusive.

Waschmeister

Hi Paul

Just to throw extra confusion into the mix, those square-door San Giorgio machines look like the Waschmeister machines sold in Ireland in the early 80s. I know nothing about where this brand came from, but they had a short period of popularity in Ireland at this point - perhaps someone over there remembers more?

Carlton

I have a late 80s dryer the model 3100 compact, seems they were sold in both grey and black.

My Mum had this dryer from 1988-1999, I found mine a few months ago on ebay, had the 60c thermostat replaced and now it runs great.

It's definately made by Crosslee.

I'd post a picture but my crappy mobile broadband stick doesn't seem to like doing that. Roll on Monday when we get proper internet (5 weeks late). I'll post it then.
