I saw this at my local store yesterday and snapped it up before actually thinking or reading the package - but you know how it is when there's a new product on the shelf!

After getting it home, I read the package and there is no mention of any bleach additive of any kind other than on the front of the package. The ingredients are sodium carbonate, sodium silicate and enzymes - no mention of any bleach, chlorine, etc. nor are there any warnings that usually accompany a chlorinated product.

I'm thinking this is probably just another oxygen bleach product without the screaming infomercial. I was hoping they were bringing back a chlorinated version of Cascade, but I guess it stands to reason they didn't/won't as dishwashers and detergents are being designed to clean with cold water now. Oh well, back to Sunlight powder or a couple of store brands I've found that still have chlorine bleach. The worst part is, I don't have a vintage dishwasher that has a large enough detergent cup to accept and cover these "action packets" so I have break open the pack and pour out the powder and shove the rest into the cup. It did seem to do a fine job in the '74 Kenmore Roto-Rack though, I did add a little Great Value to the pre-wash cup as I can't stand running a machine without some detergent to emulsify and suspend soil in the first water-change.

I'm wondering in that they have already stated on the label it contains "bleach" that is sufficient as far as labelling of ingredients go. Do manufacturers of domestic household products have to list each ingredient separately like they do on food containers by law?

If a detergent has bleach, it has to list what type for poison control, just as any other ingredient. The gel-type detergents have chlorine bleach and they clean very well in water around 140 F. Call 'em up and ask. You might get a coupon or something for your trouble.

Cascade Complete Gel,

as opposed to the Pure Rinse gel, has enzymes, and is the highest rated gel in the last Consumer Reports test of dishwasher detergents.

I was picking up a few things at Target earlier this afternoon, and the Target brand of dishwasher powder now has enzymes.

When I have a choice, I'd rather go to "Bullseye Boutique."

One can still find tons of automatic dishwasher detergents with chlorine in commercial supply stores. Heck, they even show up on fleaBay (Ecolab is the most often brand), from time to time.

Oxygen bleach unlike chlorine bleach is not corrosive nor can cause chemical reactions when mixed with other chemicals, thus does not require the special warnings often found with chlorine bleach containing household chemicals.

Oxygen bleach is pretty common now in all domestic automatic dishwashing detergents, especially those that contian enzymes, thus cannot contain chlorine bleach. The oxygen bleach in these detergents provides stain removal (coffee, tea, tomato sauce, wine, and so forth), and also provides several other functions as well.

that exciting other wayyyyyyyyyyyy

Greg, you're probably still in the kitchen after the pre-wash, so why not try this: After the main wash begins, pop the latch, and pour in a bit o' bleach. I've done it for years, using the green flavor of Clorox. The kitchen smells divine and the dishes come out clean enough to eat off of. Honest.
