I am considering getting a Chambers A model stove (Prewar). I would like to know a few things about the A model that I have not been able to learn by my research thus far.

Chambers made 4 very similar models (A, B, C, and D). The C models are the most common, with the B models next most common. A models look very similar, but are pretty uncommon. The A models have black handles as opposed to chrome and there are a few other differences too.

The A models lack the vent/opening above the pilot light. Do the A models have pilots, or do the burners have to be lit with a match? Also, does the oven have to be match lit?

I would really prefer a B model, but this one is pretty affordable and it is in working condition.

Who knows their Chambers?

Go here, young man...

We've got a Model C, so haven't had any experience with the Model A, but go to the discusssion forum at the link below, and someone will be able to give you some answers.

You'll find a great crew of Chambers enthusiasts there, folks who have worked on (or rebuilt) all the models, so someone should be able to answer your questions about the A. You can also download the "Idle Hour" cookbooks and owner's manuals, etc., from the "Literature and How-Tos" link from main website.

Good luck!

Thanks.

I signed up and am waiting for some responses. I get the impression that the Chambers group may be smaller than our group.

I have never actually seen a Chambers in the flesh (or would it be steel?). What do you think of yours? I am #2 in line for this one, so it may not happen. I still eventually want a B model with the high back and sconce lights.

Thanks Charbee,
Dave

Chanbers Model B

Hi
I have a Chambers model B 1941, high back with sconce light on each side, I've greased the gas valves, don't use the pilot lights but the broiler and oven are wonderful, even the timer works,

Appnut, that one is a Model 90C (with Model C's, the "highbacks" are the 90C and the "lowbacks" are usually 60C). It looks to be in great shape, actually. And $400 for a Chambers is purdy dang reasonable! If you go for it, I'd suggest doing a search on the discussion board I linked to for the threads about moving suggestions. You'll want to do certain things like take the sides off, and remove all the "loose" parts, and if you've got far to go, I'd take the highback off, as well. Be warned: they weigh over 400 pounds! Take a friend! We paid $600 for ours, and drove to Tyler and back to get her.

Dave, we've got a 1954 (if I remember correctly) "Freedom Red" 90C highback named Jezebel...we're still in the middle of "the long dark remodeling tea-time" of our kitchen, so we're not using her right now. We're in love with how gorgeous she is, and we're basically rebuilding the kitchen around the stove (and our '49 Westinghouse 'fridge). We were lucky to find one in pretty decent shape...we've got some restoration work to do on her, rechroming of oven racks and the top, one or two minor parts still need finding, but her porcelain is in overall excellent condition. There's pics of her on the Chambers forum.
