Cheer Bright Clean Powder - I quite fancy it...

Wanted something for using in Maytag wringer, on off trips to laundromat, and when doing tub washing. Yes, one has tons of European detergents but dosage has to be increased for use in so much water, and actual washing time is rather short so much of added benefits of say tons of enzymes are rather lost.

At risk of having one's head served on a platter here I am with a job lot of Cheer Bright Clean powdered detergent.

Lacking OBAs it is good for colors and off white things like ecru linens. Seems remarkably low sudsing and rinses rather cleanly. Scent is a fresh clean one, not at all over powering.

I haven't tried the specific "Bright Clean" formula.  Have been using Cheer "Stay Colorful" powder for a few years.  Sudsing is very low, as you say, even using 8 tablespoons for a super-size load, and the scent is nice.

Why would one's head deserve plattering for using Cheer powder?

I have a real weakness for single-use products. Used to order cases of those little glass single-serving bottles of Heinz ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise that one gets with hotel room service, as well as the little containers of butter, peanut butter and jam seen at restaurants. I generally eat cafeteria style, each food item on/in its own little plate/bowl which are all placed on a flat cafeteria tray, and love to have little single-serving accompaniments to go along with it.

However, it's expensive and produces a lot of waste, so have reverted back to full-size products--which I had to keep on hand anyway for use in recipes. The Keurig's k-cups remain the only remnant of my single-use past.

I still eat cafeteria-style, though.

Where does one procure this detergent: Dollar Stores, Five Below, Bodegas, International Markets, Amazon, Whole Fools? I take it that this is not the P&G Cheer. Is is a Sun offering? Is it made in China? I am not giving them any more money to take over the world.

Does it state HE on the package?  Is it low sudsing in a front loader or just in a top loader?

P&G discontinued this version of Cheer sometime back, but as per can find on eBay and other places that have NOS.

Boxes now in my stash are "coin vend" boxes sold to laundromats and so forth to sell on to customers to do their wash.

I used to buy those vending machine size detergents by the case.
On eBay and shipping was quite cheap.
The logo means is an older formula.
Same happened to gain, they reformulated and took out oxygen bleach.
Too bad, I really liked Gain.

I mean newer graphics means is new formula.
The newer cheer is the one with the drop shaped thing and blue package.
Though it appears cheer still contain the oxygen.

Thank you for the answers, Launderess and photo, Glenn.  There were some detergents that said HE for both that were quite foamy in a FL so I wondered. In my old age and energy deficit, I mostly just buy Powder Tide when it goes on sale at Costco and Persil Universal Powder PRN. The Persil is for bath sheets because 1 oz, as measured in the little plastic cup that comes in the box along with a measure of STPP  is the only formula that does not make too many suds in the first spin in the Speed Queen.  It extracts so well that 3 rinses are often enough to produce final rinse water that is no longer slippery. After the last rinse, I let it do two preliminary spins then shut it off and transfer the load to usually the W1918 for a final 1400 rpm spin.

Fight For The Bright

Was the catch phrase P&G advertisers came up with for Cheer Bright Clean. Detergent was advertised to fight the "dingies" with just one wash, leaving things brighter.

Now the powder one has now in stash contains sodium percarbonate. How much one cannot say at the moment, but things certainly looked quite bright while one was ironing. This from a product that doesn't contain OBAs or bluing agents.

There was also a liquid version which of course didn't contain oxygen bleach. Labeled "bleach alternative" one is going with heavy doses of OBAs were added .

My take on Cheer Color Guard: Recently bought some liquid Color Guard and tried it on a large load of white towels with some nasty kitchen towels thrown in. I was NOT impressed, stains remained that I felt should have come out. Had to rewash the load in Persil with a little chorine bleach added. The white towels also came out looking a tad dingy after the first wash, felt they weren't clean. Definitely expected better results from Cheer as I had used it for awhile, the powder version, but had quit as it had resulted in high sudsing and wanted to quit 2nd rinsing. (After I saw the remaining stains after the 1st wash, I felt that All Free & Clear, which I had been using, provided noticeably better cleaning power.) I did like the scent, wasn't overpowering. Maybe the powder version is better.
My washer is T/L SQ, uses lots of water.

Was looking for something that would not fade darker colors, but now I feel like the darker colored clothing would not be clean.

So I have a full bottle of it and will cut it with some Persil until it's used up. Seriously doubt I will be purchasing any more of it. Had read that Cheer is considered a budget detergent, I fully agree.

I'm sorry that I can't say anything better for this once esteemed brand.

Has anyone else used liquid Color Guard?

I've used only Cheer powder, on jeans, casual shorts, shirts, and sheets ... not thus far on whites.  The powder is *very* low-sudsing (typically no suds) on my untreated well-water with STPP added.

Is Cheer liquid still even widely sold? I haven't seen it in any of my grocery stores, WalMarts or Targets for a long while. At one point one could still find Cheer Powder in Walmart and Target along with Surf powder, but other than Tide and Arm &Hammer, along with the occasional box of Gain, there are just no powders on our shelves, between the 10,000 versions of Tide Liquids and various pod offerings.

I have several boxes of the first version of Cheer HE powder from around 10 years ago. In our area, Southern Connecticut, that particular product was only sold in the 120 load size and only in Sam's Club Stores. I used it occasionally, but not sure why I didn't warm up to it more... Probably too many choices between Persil, Tide with Bleach, and some of my stash of 1990s Fab, Surf and Ajax.

Cheer liquid detergent is still out there IIRC, but P&G is putting more effort into their Tide "Studio" line for darks and colors. As such Cheer in any format is becoming difficult to find in many areas.

Walmart, Target, Amazon, Home Depot and other places still have Cheer, and of course many online places do as well.

Truth to tell P&G has been trying to kill off Cheer for years now. The detergent has gone through many changes over decade to fill this or that niche. Finally "colorguard" or detergent meant for colors was replaced by Tide with "colorguard" and also now the aforementioned Tide Studio line.

Cheer is P&G's middle tier brand now, and Tide of course is their top shelf line. P&G will do nothing that cannibalizes Tide sales, so Cheer, Gain and whatever other laundry products P&G still has in their stable never will quite equal Tide across the board.

Gain is more about scent IMHO. Cheer is mid-tier bargain brand. Dreft is for infant and children clothing. Each has so many different varieties it allows P&G to continue market dominance.

Laundress, you are 100% spot on in your observations concerning P&G's offerings. Something tells me Cheer isn't going to be around much longer, and after the results I experienced certainly can see why, and I can understand why it's getting more difficult to find.

After giving much thought, I'm going to donate the full bottle to a women's shelter with some other items in a box. Maybe they will have better luck with it than what I experienced. Also thinking my water hardness out here may have something do to with the effectiveness of the product, but I did soak that load of towels for 30 minutes and washed on extended cycle in hot water...those stains and ground in dirt SHOULD have come out.

Laundress, as you say, "truth to tell" once one gets used to a top shelf detergent it can be hard going back to lower shelf products, and this certainly was the case. Was so horribly disappointed in Cheer. I think the powdered Bright & Clean was a formula that worked well, but maybe it worked too well for P&G's comfort, plus the sales of the product may have been lacking....didn't catch on. Like you said, they aren't going to take anything away from Tide. Agree 100%.
One last thing I wanted to mention while on my mind was a comment you made a while back concerning Pinesol and that the scent reminded you of a "tawdry public restroom". LOL. Since I had been using All Free & Clear going back to anything strongly scented has been difficult for me. LOL. Even switching to Persil. And it's not only laundry detergents but other cleaning and personal offerings. What you said stuck in my mind. LOL.

Adding STTP additive might help, but may not totally achieve desired results.

For now I'm sticking with Henkel's Persil and All F&C.

Tide Studio

Absolute trash. Why design a detergent for darks/colors that contains optical brighteners and only cellulase? It is a little more acceptable for 'delicates' but certainly isn't welcome here.
P$G has neutered Cheer. They easily could take Tide USR liquid formula, take out the OBAs, BS odor 'removers', Mannanase, Amylase, and Pectate Lyase, but add Cellulase, and it would be a great MOL product. The current liquid formula is reminiscent of Gain with cellulase and no amylase.
Instead of a decent MOL product we are given Gain's very poor performing products. I think by giving us a spectrum of Tide that they are making up for the gap in product range. But for the most part, these contain OBAs!

So there I was in Target (Trumbull CT Mall location) yesterday looking for some Tide Mountain Spring Powder - currently the only Tide powder scent that I can tolerate. Of course, none to be had.

However, yes there were several jugs of Cheer liquid. Not sure where they have been but this is the first time I have seen that in Target in a while. So it is still being sold.

Since I didn't see any Tide Mountain Spring there or in three different WalMarts, I went to the Tide website and that is the one product that doesn't show up. I was able to score some on WalMart's website and Target's website but not sure how long that will last before it isn't available any longer. Walmart's website only showed 2 left so I bought them. Amazon has it but it is $25.00 for the 102 load size - around $7.00 more than WalMart/Target was selling it...
