i just remembered something and im sick with excitement writing this but can you help me out? I know the location of a Servis wringer machine. Its a superheat model and at a guess its dated late 50s early 60s? A big single tub machine which is the body is rounded square in shape with a large wringer with black rubber plastic rollers. The wash tub is grey blue in colour with a large black agitator. The lid was large metal round thing with black rubber seals and a black mushroom shaped handle in the middle. Its at my old junior school and although i not been there for 12 years im sure it will still be there as it was used as a display item for 1 to 2 months a year then stored away. Its in near perfect condition last time i saw it and i remember it smelled of hot rubber and daz whenever i looked in the tub. Would it be worth anything and should i go to the school and ask to buy it? What would i offer as a genuine collector bid with on intention to sell it on? What would it be worth to a collector? I was thinking 30 quid for myself.

any help on the subject would be a help mike. Thanks, Nick if any other guys can also shed light please do so too. Any help appreciated ta

Wilkins Servis wringer

Hey Nick,

I know the exact wringer you are referring to: my folks had one when i was a kid: i put my hand through the wringer once!!! lol

There are plenty of those still around out here in Oz: they can be picked up for about AU$5.00.

I personally think it would be worth getting and keeping considering that company (here in Oz anyway) disappeared in the 70's.

Cheers
Leon

if i do manage to get it

which powder or detergent did wilkin servis recommend? I only like to use detergents that are recommended by the manufacturer as a rule although i am a die hard persil fan in any modern machine. it would only be fair to use whatever as its my first collection machone. Im guessing daz ideal for handwash and twin tub as ariel was not made. Maybe tide as that was uk available in the 50s? Persil just does not seem right for this machine. I would love to watch my whites in it. Drools . . . . .Nick

remembered more

the one in question has a small rectangle door on the front which makes me guess its gas heated? Am i right and this is where the pilot light is? There is also a small knob on the front which i cant remember what it did. I only remember the electric flex on the back so not sure about the heat source etc etc. No filling hoses either. Would i use a normal hose to fill? Lots of questions but i would love to know all about this wonderful machine.

Wringer Washer

Hi Nick

Get down there and make an offer, a donation to school funds would be good, some of these machines do come on ebay and local papers and such for £10ish upwards...depends on condition

I think from what you said of the "small door on front and control knob" its the Hotpoint Empress, the Servis Superheat machines had a full panel door that opened and indeed they did have a "Gas Heated" ServisAire Burner, the early twinnies could also be converted...Have a look at the pics and let us know which it is...

the big cream one on the left looks about the same. I cant see what make it is but its what i remember. On the front the left black thing is a handle? On the right its a switch? Above the little door is the dial? Bit put off now i know its gas heated. I guess i could fill it with very hot tap water but its not the same as letting it boil away itself. How would i have to connec it to the gas? Im guessing via old style connections. So i couldnt pull my gas cooker out and use that or fit a regulator and use calor gas?

the cream one on the left what is that little door on the front? Thats what im on about and i think i remember maybe the one at school had full door too? Double doors for some reason. I never messed with it. Just admired it. It was definitely a superheat servis. I remember the scrawly written servis badge.
