HOLY S**T!!!

Thats version III of that cleaner and one I have not seen since they were in the stores!
$15 would be ok, and he's 5 minutes from where I work!

YEAH!!!

I am glad someone needed it. I wish I was closer and could have picked it up but since I live in the far southwest suburbs, it's too far of a drive.

Hope you were able to contact him Jeff and pick it up! :)

Please send better pics once you get it as I would love to see it's real beauty!

some history

Model U4001 was exclusive to Kmart, and introduced in 1972.
originally it was seal griege medium and taupe(myhooverco has this variation)

Variation II was persian gold and taupe

This one is variation III in copper and taupe.

I am just about to leave work(after a 13 hour day) and will email the seller when i get home. The location he mentioned is 10 minutes from here. I don't have access to personal email from here, and would prefer not to give out my work email address.
If anyone wants this I will be happy to pass it along, just let me know.

the two-tone taupe version sounds interesting. that classic motor cover shape is one of my favorites.

Whoa....

I have never seen a convertible those colors before! How interesting. I had no idea. The hood and base look like the colors are backwards :) Take pics when you get it! Cool find!

forgot to mention

This was the first ONE speed Convertible, and you could buy it at Kmart for $49.99 including a set of 1031 cleaning tools

Here is my U4001 Kmart special. It is also a one speed. It is kind of a grey with a taupe colored base and a white bumper (half only). This machine has a very short cord 16 foot and it comes with a snap close bag. I like the orange base on the machine in the beginning of the thread...I would also love to find one. Kmart had to have sold thousands of these at that price (thanks Jeff!). I think in this case that the color may vary by shipment. You were still getting a good vacuum cleaner just the colors changed as they had to use up resources to be able to sell them at this low price.

That is a BEAUTIFUL Convertible! i am SHOCKED at the thought of a rear-conversion Convertible with one speed.

one speed...

just pop the "hockey stick" out of any model 35 or 70 or later Convertible and you'll have the tool suction of the U4001.

Tom this is yours if I get it, its a little late, but I always manage to find something unique for your B-day.

Tom...

Can you snap a pic of that 4001 next to a 1060 or 1070 so they can see the colors together? The hood/bag/cord on your machine are the Seal Griege medium

I got it

I picked up the Convertible this morning, its dirty but will clean up nicely.
I'd post a pic, but its in my trunk, and my trunk(along with the rest of the car) is over at the Enterprise rental lot so I could bring the cargo van home for tomorrow's new arrivals.

I also had a look at the dryer, it is a Whirlpool and in decent shape, The guy said it runs but needs some work.
He was very nice.
Pics to come soon..

Here is the U4001 with family

This pic is of my plain U4001 single speed with its more deluxe model 1070(1969) and model 1060(1967) cousins. Jeff is right when you take out the switch actuator aka hockey stick then you have a one speed convertible. My U4001 was given to me by a good friend out in Buffalo NY. In fact I am going to see him and his wife this month to do some thrifting out their way. I am so intrigued by the differences in the same model of the U4001...different paint color etc. Usually Hoover changed model numbers like we change underwear...a slight color change usually meant a new model number.

More U4001 family pictures

Here is the U4001 in the center with its kissing cousin the U4017 which was made around the same time. The U4017 on the left is more deluxe because it is a two speed model, has a full bumper, a deluxe zippered bag, and a handle grip. The only thing keeping it from being a top line model is the lack of a headlight. They simply used leftover bags from the previous years 1076 and stuck them on this rather ugly cleaner. Enjoy the pics!

let me get this straight...

are yall saying that the kmart cheapie has a two speed motor BUT does NOT have the actuating lever? David

David

The Kmart model is one speed, and NOT two speed.

Whay I meant is if you want to simulate a 1 speed Convertible all you have to do is remove the hockey stick.

one speed is one speed...
I'll post pics one I get my car..

okay, i figured it would hardly save Hoover any money to put the normal convertible motor in a Kmart model but leave out the lever. i neutered the speed function in my Guardsman almost as soon as i got it. the same way, cept the Guardsmans was handle actuated. thanks for the great pics, HooverCo! for years ive been undecided on the 1076 bag, but both those Kmart models are very attractive, imo.

a head scratcher

The U4001 was the only one speed model at the time(that I am aware of)
Hoover would have done better to put the two speed motor in it, as they were making a special motor for ONE model...
Thats what Kmart wanted though...

Now David take the hockey stick out of your 1060 and use the rear conversion tools

actually sounds kinda appealing. i HATE the sound Convertibles make at high-speed. i wont talk about the Convertible converter...

and

im just taking a wild guess, but i suspect its almost the same motor, minus the switch or a couple wires. David

it was the same motor...

the only thing different was the way the field coil was wound, otherwise everything else was the same

so it WAS wound different? right, it DOES sound like extra hassle for Hoover, and for an economy model no less.

well sure, and as fast as Hoover was cranking out the two speed models, one speed ones would have been a hassle
