We had a Hotpoint Supermatic bought in 1968, that lasted until 1981 and was replaced with another Supermatic. That machine only lasted until 86 when the spinner broke of its axle at full 3100rpm and smashed the machine (and me almost!) to bits . We then had a Servis Twinny (second hand) for a while, can't remember the model. I then bought my Mum her 1st automatic when I left home at 17, it was an Ariston BOL machine which lasted two years, replaced by a second hand Electrolux WM31 which was great, super quiet and built like a tank. When the programmer went on it my Mum got a 1200rpm indesit ( the one with the handle near the top of the door. That lasted 9 years. My Mum now has a Beko ecocare, I think it's about 7yrs old and has been a great wee machine.

Interesting...
I can't imagine a quality Hopoint Supermatic falling apart. Scary sounding though. I assume the can came off the axle where there are 4 bolts holding it on?
Mum had Hotpoint 9537 and TL21
Aunt had Hotpoint WD22
Other Aunt had Hotpoint WD22
Gran had Hotpoint 9404
Other Aunt had Hotpoint 95** and 93***
Lady down the road had various Hotpoints in a shed

The axle actually snapped! I tell you it was very scary and the noise was unbelievable!
I think that machine was made on a friday afternoon as we had a few things go wrong. Firstly the rubber boot at the bottom of the spin can leaked and had to be replaced then the shoes on the spinner clutch wore out. By the end of it's life I was totally fed up of it and longed for an automatic! Plowing through 11 or 12 loads every saturday got to be a real chore!

The machine was totally destroyed. The wash tub was dented badly, the control panel was buckled and the cabinet looked like someone had too a lump hammer to it! The inside of the machine was splintered plastic and torn wires.

1998 i came into the world and we used to have a brown and almond 1995 hoover softwave which was very baisic 3 buttons 1 dial, i used to watch it all the time after i lerned how to walk
thae hoover died in 2003 and mam orderd a very baisic indesit 3 buttons 2 dials and the damn thing was a pice of C$£P, broke constantly every 3 months and died 18 months later.
then in 2004 we supposidly orderd a 7.5kg hoover nextra but the cataloge sent us the wrong machine but i loved the thing to bits, nice high water levels like our old softwave and then in 2006 in november 3 days before i was due to go on holiday the programmer broke, the dial just kept turning around and all you could hear from the machine was the pump chugging and the dial making a click klack noise as it turnd around, bye bye my old friend
in 2006 we orderd the otpoint aqualtis and i have been super impressed with it!
i will do a seperate reply about machines my relitives had that i used to-and still watch

Childhood machines.... well. Born in 1979 and my mum already had a Colston Concorde twinny fron 1975 which was part of her "bottom drawer". That lasted until I was about 13 I think, then she got fed up with having steam in the kitchen every Thursday with mounds of washing all over the kitchen floor (in colour co-ordination of course)and when the spin catch gave up she decieded on getting an auto (after a few very old Hoovermatics) like all her mates had. This being late Thatchers Britain, we didn't have alot of money, so she ended up buying a second hand Indesit, which was one of those where you had to drag it out and chain the inlet to the cold tap, controls on top...that lasted around a year until the bearings gave out. Then it was back to a Hoovermatic by which time I was well into doing the weeks washing. During my GCSE exams my mum bought a second hand Hoover 1100 auto, silver one with square door, and it lasted well, (even though it was my age!!) and I was still busy doing my nans washing in her Hoovermatic (orange knobs and swivel rinse arm) after her Colston Coronette packed in... I now have the Hoovermatic T5090 she had when she died, although it is out of action as I need a new pump....... I do remember a period when I was around 18 when my mum had a Servis Supertwin 111 for a bit, which was nasty.

Mom had late 40s and mid 50s Westinghouse slant fronts. Dad worked there and got discounts.
Grandma had a 40s Thor wringer and 50 Easy Spindrier.
I also hung around the stripmall laundry, they'd let me play with the 25lb Cook manual commercial. But not the Bosch extractor. The Cooks didn't spin, just fill drain and tumble.

We had a Bosch bought in 1966 and we had it until 1976. It was replaced by a Miele.

Adamatic twin tub, which I have no memory of, then a Philips Top Twin Deluxe for the majority of my childhood years, another Adamatic that lasted about 6 months then a Hoovermatic Deluxe before the first auto.......................

Our neighbours had one of those, but they had a 6kg model. It had a dial under the timer that could be set between 4 and 6kg. Lovely machines, I loved watching it do a boil wash!

Born in 1990, Mum had a Zanussi S218T that she'd had since new. This was replaced by an Electra branded Creda in 1993 (1200 spin, 2 dials, 4 buttons. Unsure of the model number) that lasted a mere 3 years with constant repairs until it finally clapped out. We then had a Zanussi FJ1995 in 96 which we had for 10 years until the bearings went. We then had a Euronics exclusive Bendix which Mum still has. I moved out in 2009 and now have a Miele Prestige Plus 6.
Dryer wise, we only ever had 2 - a Philips D162 and then later a Hotpoint TL51. Again, my Mum still has the latter.

born in 1957 my mums first machine was a hoover single tub washer with a mangle on top the first washer hoover made [so im led to beleive ] it didnt even have a pump after doing the washing the hose was let down onto the back step the back yard would be scrubed with the water rather than waste it when my sister came along a year later we got a brand new wringer washer rather like a hotpoint empress it was an english electric with three controls on the front and a small lever for engaging the pump next we got a hoovermatic twintub from a shop called Uptons we got a free hoover junior with it i still have the junior its still in everyday use after that we had the next hoover twintub [think it was the wash dog ]by this time i am in my 20s the next machine was the first hoover twintub with the safety switch on the spindryer after a week or two my mum asked me if i could do away with the safety switch as it was a dam nuisance after compromising the switch that machine lasted right up to the early 80s only then did we get an automatic only because we culdent find a new twintub anywhere i still have the washdog and the english electric wringer washer i have a rather grusome story conected to that machine my father came in from the pub one sunday afternoon a bit worse for wear bent over the machine and threw up into it meanwhile his tie was slowly disapearing into the wringer my mum came in fron the garden [i didnt know she could swear like that]and pushed the realease bar but the tie had gone round the bottom roller which was still revolving i came into the kichen to see what all the fuss was about to find my mum franticly trying to cut through the tie with a carving knife i pulled the plug out just in time happy days Anthony

Thank you for sharing your memories with us. Coul dyou post some pictures of teh English Electric wringer washer please - most of us wil be familiar with it from "All Mod Cons" which seemed to contain a lot of old EE footage, but I am not sure if anyone has one in their collection, so it would be great to see yours

1991-1993 - 1982 Hoover Electronic 1100 (bought second hand) started bouncing around the kitchen
1993-2001 - Whirlpool AWM820 (a modern whirlpool with 80s philips insides, 800rpm spin) - Machines concrete block started to weaken, causing it to become noisy (i have fond memories of this machine chugging away with some 90s Bold Spring Fresh Powder)
2001-2010 - Zanussi FJS1225W - Great Machine, My favourite machine, loved the jetsystem, the circuit board went in it, and kept giving E90 error
2010- Beko WM5120W - Current Machine, is still going and still new, bought it for my parents,
I have moved out and my housemates dad who owns the house got a second hand 2002 Bosch Maxx, which I like alot for the quick cycle times, like the option to have wash plus if needed, and I like the 6kg load.
