as the photo above is from the 102P parts book , I'd guess I have an oil clutch just like the Kelvinator vaseline clutch.

 

Chester passed his water test today with flying colors so now just relube the motor and he's ready to go back into service.

That is interesting I was under the impression that the oil clutch was earlier and the dry clutch came out later. But that makes sense now.

I finally found a photo of the foam strips.  This is the tub assembly from a really beat up 102P that I parted out years and years ago.

do I see a slight bulge at the bottom where the sediment collects? So I'm guessing since the foam covers the top of the hole sections that forces ALL the water in the tub to shoot up the open sections making a sediment jet on spin.

Maytagganation Rocks! I can't wait to get Chester into service!

Finally I can work out how the perforated tub with solid liner sits within the outer tub...Congratulations on the latest addition, looks in fine fettle.

Redesigned inner tub in MT AMP style Washers

This probably would have helped somewhat with the serious sediment redepositing they had with their early washers. I have always felt that MT really tried to make their appliances perform better, last longer and made them easier to service the longer they built them.

Their biggest problem was when they initially brought out a new appliance design it was usually much less well throughout and tested than appliances from Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire and even Westinghouse. Serious design, perform ace and durability flaws existed in their Helical drive washers and the SOH dryers that went unfixed for decades, but they did eventually fix them, Yay.

Oh wow, that is very cool Jon!  That would be pre "Let's Talk Service", which started in April of 1955.  Finding anything prior to that is quite difficult.  Thanks for sharing!

I have quite  a few letters from Maytag in this volume, 1950 - 1955. I'll scan them and make a collection for aw.

 

There are all kinds of service bulletins on the washer.
