Clean & Shiney Coppertone Goodness Rescued from The Pile...

Coppertone is getting to be such a unusual color that I saw her right away as I pulled into the shop... After sitting there for *just* a second to admire, right in she went.

SHE is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! I can't even fathom why someone would send that to the pile! They must have been dropped on their head as a child, or NEEDS to be now!

The aqua paint is pristine. A single speed, shallow tub Highlander (with a soak cycle...)! All the chrome is in great shape, too.

Another shot. CLEAN!!!

A quick eval turned up a couple of things...

Three out of four motor carrage rollers were broken in half, belts were needed and the pump was binding up. Took care of all that and tried a test load. Agitation is slow to start and will get going and stay strong with a brief tug on the motor (I don't have to hold it all the time. Once the agitation starts, it's good). Either I need to do a rework on the carrage tension (I used new rollers and springs...) or the transmission might need some work. I also might have to do the damper pads at some point. The spin is FANTASTIC! Quiet and fast.

Someday I'll find my CA906 to match my CDE906, but in the meantime, this will do nicely.

To explain how the machine got to your pile...do you think perhaps someone bought a home or property nearby where this machine was included, and they wanted it "updated" (a word you hear on the Home and Garden channel all the time) so out went this gem and in came the GE Hydrowave or worse? LOL If so, their loss is your gain!

I showed the pics to my mom, she couldn't believe someone would throw that out instead of selling it to a collector. Then we started talking about her old Whirlpool and my grandma's old 71 Push Button Lady Kenmore set. I hate to say the Lady's were given away for scrap metal (insert cry and whimper here). And my mom reminded me of the old Whirlpool top load dishwasher we had, she said she thinks it was from the 60's. Man had this website been going back then, I could have saved those machines!

Our church's music director had that exact very same washer (but in white). It lasted until 1976 or 1978, replaced by a Kenmore. Survived doing laundry for a family of 4 kids and htey all went through cloth diapers. I did many of that family's wash from 1970 on.

how could anyone in their right mind throw a machine that beautiful in the garbage! it's a sin! there should be a gigantic warehouse somewhere where all old appliances could go until someone wants them in their collection. putting them in the trash is just wrong! it's history being destroyed!

Holy freakin score!!

I'm surprised it has the the two piece baffled agitator.....with fabric softener dispenser, to boot. Those were usually on the higher end models only. That shiny Bakelite agitator = low mileage. YAY!!

That is a very special machine. It's in beautiful shape at 45 years old and an excellent example of genuine Maytag build quality. I love the color, and I'm not a big coppertone fan.

Folks, ya gotta realize that not everyone sees the value in an old machine. To most people, it's a 45YO washer, way past it's prime. And with the issues it had, it was more cost effective to get a new one.
Look at it this way, Andrew's employer sells a new machine, the customer is happy with their purchase, Andrew saves the old one. Everyone's happy!

Kenny's observation is probably very appropriate. Plus, what also makes this machine very undesireable is the fact it is only 1-speed.

What a score! As others have pointed out, that's a very unusual color for a machine like that and looks surprisingly smart. Plus it's got the beautiful color dial as well. Nice!

That is a really nice machine! How DARE someone have sent it to the scrap pile!! Still, you got to rescue it and will give it all kinds of TLC. Great save!! Oh, and that is a nice shade of coppertone, too!

Yeah, Kenny's right. Considering the repairs the machine needed and the cost associated with them, to the average consumer the machine wasn't worth fixing, particularly in view of its BOL characterisitics and limitations. People like us know it's not a big deal to get the machine back in proper working order, but we're not paying parts and labor rates to accomplish that.

The important thing is that RCD saved it. You go guy! Keep up the excellent rescue work! We've got haulaway-envy here!

I totally agree with Kenny. Many people don't or can't see these machines being as restorable as we do (or don't care...). I WILL say that whoever owned her stands out for how well this was kept. I wiped off a few fingerprints for the pictures. NO MAJOR CLEANING was done! The shiny coppertone color was what first caught my attention. The lid open shot was taken in as found condition! I wish more people would at least keep their machines in cleaner condition...
