I have a GE electric stove with glass top. I have tried various cleaners specifically for glass tops such as Weimans and Bar Keepers Friend. Plenty of scrubbing with Dobbie pads and the top comes out clean but there are still spots on the top.
After the stovetop cleaner, I rinse with a sponge, then I use Windex to remove the rest of the residue left behind by glass top cleaners.
Any suggestions?

In customer's homes, I typically use a dab of Comet on a soft rag (microfiber) and rub lightly until the spot/stain is gone. You have to be gentle or you'll scratch the glass, but you can leave the goo on the top for a few minutes to let the bleach do it's work. I've had relatives of my clients call to find out how I get their range tops so clean...and never a damaged one yet.

Sidol cleaner for Ceran (from your Miele dealer) is also an amazing product but to expensive for me to use at work.

Ross by all means get yourself some Mr. Clean magic errasers! I have found that they do by far the very best job on the glass tops and never scratch! Terry

Could the windex be burning upon the next use?

I use paer towels with which to clean the smooth-top, and then clean paper towels to rinse.

It is my understanding that the contents of the sponge will get onto the surface and burn upon subsequent uses creating stains.

IIRC GE "allows" use of a nylon scrubber pad whereas Whirlpool does not.

I use Soft Scrub on mine and it works great and doesn't scratch.

I use the creamy stuff from Sears and a damp paper towel and a small scraper if needed, and mine looks and feels just as good as the day we bought it. If the stain doesn't come off right away I apply a thin layer of the cream with a damp paper towel then let it sit for a few minutes. After, I scrape with the scraper and wipe off with a paper towel and repeat if needed.

We also got a Vileda scrunge that's safe for glass cooktops, and while it does get the caked-on stuff off and removes most of the stains by itself, the surface doesn't feel as smooth after using it, so after using the scrunge I polish it with the cream again and it's as good as new. Bear in mind my cooktop is white so we can see every stain and discolouration on it, and being a perfectionist I want it to be impeccably clean, and this method works great for me.

I do wish I had a gas cooktop though. The saute pan I use is warped on the bottom so it's a pain to use on the cooktop, but the cookware that isn't warped only has the cladding on the bottom, so if I changed to gas then the rising hot vapour would scorch the food on the un-clad sides. At least my cast iron doesn't have that problem!

Soemtimes a razor blade is a girl's best friend...

Ross,

Is the glass white or black? IIRC your appliances are now white.

I had both a white-topped one and a black-topped one. The black one showed less residue/dirt and glowed red. The white-topped one was more of a neon ornage, when hot, and would not come fully clean no matter what I did. But then again some of the suggestions here are more aggressive than I was daring enough to get.

Hi Steve. When I bought the white appliances last year, I was tempted to go with the white cooktop but I figured that it would never look clean so I got a white stove with black cooktop.

I used Cook's Ceramic top cleaner

It does a great job on my cooktop. This is what was packaged with my stove when I bought my Maytag in 1996. It can also be purchased at Sears in my area. Wipe the Cooks on your top with a damp rag, then wipe it with a dry paper towel or bar towel. You don't want to use something else to remove the Cooks as it places a silicone protectant on your top that makes it shine and protects from future spills.

For stubborn burnt on messes I use a flat razor blade and then an eraser sponge. Followed With Cook's.

BTW--My cook top is black on black--never again. It shows every finger print, and dust speck around. My friend has white on black cooktop. It doesn't show the finger prints or dust like mine does.

I use Ajax scratch resistant cleanser with a Scoth Brite scratch resist pad and get excelent results.I use a little elbow grease but I have had this range (JBP83CECC) since October'07 and it looks like the day I bought it.I have self cleaned my oven twice and got a stain where the vent is.I used Ajax and some elbow grease. It took a few cleanings but it did come out.I also use a razor blade before the cleanser to scrape off the residue/burned-cooked on stains.the ones used to scrape the paint off of windows and mirrors work the best.
