Clothesline Question...

I was wondering... Is there a specific name for the type of clothesline that resembles an umbrella that the wind has blown inside out? I'd like to find one. I've seen the square type like this, but is not what I'm looking for... Does anybody know of a company that still makes these? Or I'm I just going to have to find a vintage one on ebay if it ever turns up?

Our house had the umbrella style clothesline in the yard of our home when we bought it in 1998.  The previous owner had cemented a piece of pipe in the ground that allowed you to set it in.  It was great when it came time to mow the lawn, just pull it out, mow over the pipe, and put the clothesline back in place.  But, one windy Saturday morning the wind caught it just right, and it broke off right at ground level.  I suspect that the aluminum pipe had gotten weak with age. 

 

 

P.S. The clothesline was full at the time it broke.

Local Hardware Stores

A local Ace Hardware has a good selection of laundry accessories, so check local hardware stores.

I have seen a DIY clothsline similar to this made from the innards of a former "market" style patio umbrella. The wood frame makes it easy to drill holes and run cord thru it. Also portable, just set it in the table and umbrella base.

They are very popular over here in the UK, I have one - we call them rotary clothes lines.

When the time came, I "cheaped out" and put in one from the local box store, similar to those pictured above (made in China, yuck). While it still works great, if I had it to do over again, I'd spend the extra and get a "Sunshine Clothes Dryer". USA Made (right here in Iowa) since 1915. I've seen them carried at traditional retail stores (Amazon price seems HIGH). And make no mistake, this is the old fashioned BIG style. Steel and wood, no plastic clips or sleeves to wear out or break.
