Those Oster pots are very nice looking as well, Steve and I saw one at a thrift store when he was here visiting - the solid color, not clear and I think it was green as well.

Thanks for sharing these with us, the stories are sometimes better than having the stuff!
 
Smooth Move

Soaking the rubber gasket, from the Coffee Master, in glycerin, will help to soften it and lengthen it's productive life.
A cheap and readily available source of concentrated glycerin is a Fleet enema!
Remember, only Folgers in your cup.

Gary--It's interesting to see the little design changes in those Oster pots over the years--spout, lid knob, etc. I have both the solid Avocado and the see-through Harvest Gold models. Currently using the HG one as my daily driver.

Now, my avocado one came with a special Oster-branded white cord. I really like it, as the standard black cord is so ugly. When I tried to use it with the HG one, it didn't fit i to the "hole" as well.

(Okay, I'm really opening myself up here...)

I could force it in, but it was a really tight fit and I usually ended up with some sparks.

There. Done.

Anyhoo... the standard black plug works with the HG Oster, so go fig.

Love that Universal of yours! From the first couple of pictures, I though it was from the '30s. How surprising to find it's a much newer model.

Gary thanks so much for the pictures. That is such a neat story about how you got the Sunbeam Coffeemaster. The gasket is removable but you have to know what you are doing to get it off. I have never done it myself but I am sure someone here does. It sure makes a great cup of coffee. That Regency is such a beautiful coffee maker as well. Not sure how it happens that I have never seen one before. Thanks again. I really enjoy our daily coffee fix!! Terry

I recall my Mom had a Pyrex percolater, but it didn't seem to last very long. Sooner or later it got chipped or cracked or too much thermal shock.

I had one, as I recall, as well, in the 70's. It lasted an even shorter time with me. But I was more into tea, at the time, anyway.

Haven't seen a Pyrex percolater in a shop in a long time. Are they still manufactured?

Pyrex percolator was discontinued a long time ago, maybe 10?-15?-20? years. I see them from time to time at Goodwill/Salvation Army shops, however.

I think it is too bad, for glass is a good material for coffee making.

I also think that heatproof glass is the ideal material for a double boiler. There used to be a Pyrex double boiler, and then later, a Corning Visions double boiler.

GE Perk

This is a 9 cup perk by General Electric. There is a slide lever which goes from Strong to Mild...and also a 'reheat' feature which allows you to simply reheat cold coffee without re-perking. There is a little red light with the GE logo that glows when the coffee is ready. There is another version of this(which I have somewhere) that has a black bakelite panel on the side(with the lever and light) instead of the chrome panel. These perks make super HOT and fast coffee....

Gary, I love your percs!

But tell me, how do you care for them? Daily use can lead to staining of the interior, and sometines you find a really nice looking one at a sale only to open it up and find a disaster.

There used to be a product called Dip-it especially for percolators. Is it still out there or do you have your own formula?

These percs are too nice to not be able to use for fear of that dreaded build-up.

Coffee pot cleaning..

I use OxiClean in my vintage pots. Some hot water and a little OC will clean them up like new. I have a thermos jar that I put coffee into to keep warm and that also gets terribly stained.

I boil some water on the stove, put a half a scoop of OC in the bottom and put it in the sink. SLowly pour a little boiling water in and it will foam up (the reason for putting it in the sink). While it foams you'll see the water turn brown. As the foaming subsides I add a little more water until it is full and let it sit for about 15 minutes. I don't even have to brush it. It comes out like new.

Be careful in your pots if you have some that cannot get wet so start slowly and add water as the foaming dies down but I guarantee a pot that looks like new. THe key is let it sit for about 15 minutes and then rinse it out. I have done this on SS, chrome and aluminum pots with great success.

I am interested to hear what others use. I use oven cleaner. I perc a pot of just hot water then empty it out. This is to heat up the pot. I then spray the insides and basket/filter and cover/glass knob (not for aluminum pots) with oven cleaner. Let it sit for a few hours then fill the pot up with water (don't rinse out oven cleaner yet) and run it through another cycle. This should remove the most stubborn stains and it also makes the pot smell increadibly fresh. I do this to my Sunbeam Coffeemaster about once every 2 weeks and it comes out looking and smelling like new.

I use a cleaner called Dip-It which is sold in a small local grocery store. You have to be careful with that product, because it does not work on aluminum perks. I clean the outside with Glass Plus, and also polish with Final Detail(a liquid car was available thru QVC)

Gary, that Society Easy-Flo is like, the greatest! Was the manufacturer "Society", or just the model name? Who actually made it? Never seen anything like it!

Love your kitchen, too--particularly that gay cookie jar!

I can still get Dip-It in the supermarket. Anyone wants some, just give me a holler.

Quick and Easy

Fill the pot will cold water, letting it come part way up the basket. Put 3 Tbs. Cascade dishwasher detergent in the basket and replace the spreader plate and cover. Let it perc through a cycle. Rinse and wash. Follow that with a perc cycle of water and baking soda.
Just a sudsy wash between batches goes a long way to keeping the coffee maker gleaming.
