I too have a Coffee Master vacuum pot. Picked it up at an antique fair here in Sacramento, there were two available. One had a cracked rubber gasket, the other was unknown as it was stuck together, but appeared to be in better condition. I pulled it apart, with help. The gasket is perfect in appearance, and pliable when heated.

Mixfinder: thanks for the glycerine hint, I knew that something would work to help the pliability.

So here's what I do. I place a large plastic glass of water in my 700r Radarange for two minutes (I start with hot tap water). Then I place the upper pot in the hot water for a few minutes, the gasket gets nice and pliable. Then I insert it in the lower pot, full of cold water, place the washable filter and coffee. After the coffee is brewed, I disassemble and clean the top pot. They really make nice smooth coffee, supposedly the temperature is not too hot to make it bitter. And as mentioned the drama is fun, mine is placed on a formica counter, which sets up a vibration similar to a volcano going off.

Cleaning up my act.

Thought I'd try DAWN power dissolver in the Farberware coffee pot. Foamed up and worked like a charm.

No crubbing!
No soaking!
and no more ring around the collar....er coffee maker.

The idea came to me when oven cleaner was mentioned above.
I believe this stuff has the same lye/sodium-hydroxide in it, only watered-down and less caustic. Interesting how the label simply says:

*Contains biodegradable alkaline cleaning agents and solvents. Contains no phophate.* [SIC]

Well anyhoo it works well and with all the warinings on it including skin irritation and strong smell,I believe I have
found another weapon in my arsenal against dirt. (OMG I have finally turned into my mother who has a personal vendetta against it!)

Sorry, no may not be used in (my) mouth.

What a way to kick off the start of the Memorial Day weekend festivities serving your guests CAW-FEE. from this all porcelain coffeemaker. It is quite heavy when empty, and, just imagine it filled with your favorite brew…….bring it to your guests and get a HERNIA……..OUCH!….then…..they can wait on YOU for the rest of the weekend. Look at the ‘pineapple’ top….the envy of your neighbors.

That porcelain electric is beautiful, and I never knew about the Corning pots that didn't look like other Corningware (I have the famous blue cornflower one). When you say genuine Corning cord Gary, is it that one with the funky connection like they used on some of these blue Cornflower ones? Mine uses the regular cords, but I've seen the other one too.

There's one West Bend I like that has a cord almost like an electric frypan cord, with that little piece of metal that sticks out, and the ready light is on the cord rather than the pot. That one I'd save for special days, since I find the cords are "shot" after a few years' use, at least on the Farberware like Toggle's that I use most of the time. In fact one nearly sent me flying across the kitchen a few years back; must have been some kind of short or something inside the cord.

Dip-it does a beautiful job of cleaning percolators too. It's getting harder and harder to find, and last time I bought it online, but it's a great product.

Corning Cord

Corning made several versions and styles of the electric pots. Some of them used the regular cords, and others took that 'special' cord(as pictured below). I plan on putting some of the Corning pots on in the next coming weeks. An interesting fact is that Corning did not only make the 10 cup electrics, but also made 6 cup electrics(I have several of those too).

In my collection, I have a Dormeyer percolator that has a control like a fry pan. Will dig that out sometime too.

The regular cords(like on the Farberware) can be purchased at most local hardware stores.

Guess I am lucky....the grocery store about 5 minutes away from me still stocks Dip-It.

Awesome Gary! I have amassed quite a collection of the standard cords, so generally have some on hand when one goes bad, and am very happy that they're still available. When I bought the last batch of Dipit, I hadn't moved to LA yet. There's this cool old hardware store a few blocks from here, one of those cluttered, messy ones that has a little of everything; it's a wonderful store. I bet they have dipit!

This one is just for you. A little tease as to what it to come. Pictured are mother and daughter, father and son, bride and groom.......A 10 cup Blue Cornflower with matching trivet(used on the countertop to prevent burns) and the 6 cup version(also with matching trivet). Both of these pots take that special plug....FYI

What fun! I didn't know these came in different sizes in electric (I knew they did in stovetop). Mine looks just like the one on the right, except it takes the standard cord. I didn't have the trivet, but the late Kenmore1978 had one and sent it to me.

Hey Jason,

The C20A was introduced sometime in October 1938 and was produced until October 1941 at which time the the C20B was introduced. I'm not sure what the difference is between the A & B models. Both of these models were available with Buffet sets (tray, sugar & creamer) for approx $10 more. I can shoot a pic of the set if you would like to know what it looks like in case you would like to look for one for yours.

That is a C30A. The C20 series didn't have a handle for the top pot and the filter screwed onto a post in the bottom of the pot. The handle and a spring loaded filter were added on the C30 series. If you enlarge the picture of the box you will see the cat # pretty clearly (C30A)

That was a pretty good price for that unit w/box! Having the box adds to the value.

Digressing from percs and vacs

I've been using an early handblown Chemex with the Chemex brand square filters and love it--it has that 50's modern look to go with my 50's house. It's slow brewed and tasty, and since I boil and pour, I can't burn it while caring for two preschoolers or getting engrossed in the discuss-o-mat.

Even better, I got it for $1 at an estate sale.

The all-glass one is DREAMY!
Sometimes low-tech is fabulous!

Great also for households where some have tea and others coffee. Combined with an electric kettle is is just superb!

I have the below kettle.
LOVE it.
No *keep-warm* heater, though!
No whistle, but the CLUNK of it shutting itself off is fairly notice-able.

Maybe I can find a whistle for it.............

ah..and the plastic base (below the stainless bottom on the kettle itself), mates with the plastic sub-base to which the flex cord is attached. There is a patented electrical connection that makes the kettle *cordless*

The benefit of this is that the kettle can go right on the dining room table without a trivet..it is not hot.

That is the same concept with my 6 cup cordless Delonghi percolator. You can brew the coffee and bring the pot to the table.

This idea worked for me...

I have a Sunbeam C30A that I really like to use, but we all know how difficult it can be to acquire cloth filters.
I have a Cuisinart drip coffee maker that uses the #4 cone filters and it came with a permanent type filter, which I rarely used.
I cut the screens out of it and then cut 2 discs to fit the Sunbeam's filter holder. It works great and is easy to clean.
Thought I should share this idea.

Do you have any problems with that Delonghi Perc, I read that the little black knob seperates from the lid, and coffee comes out after a few months use - have you found this?

ALso Toggles, and in other pics, Im ALWAYS so amazed at how thin your electrical leads are over there, here in UK our kettle leads are pretty thick and look much more sumstansial than yours? Do you guys ever have probelms with leads getting hot? toggles what wattage is that kettle reated at, over here I think the top kettles are about 3 Kw, do you guys have that wattage on your 110 system?

I have not had any problems with the 'little black knob' but then again, I use this perk very infrequently. I just love percolators where you can watch the coffee brew thru the top. Something about that creates a warm situation watching the coffee spout out of the tube against the see-thru top.
