Combo52's new GE Range on its way home!

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

John,

What a gorgeous stove! And a model I've never seen before although it has most of the lines of the 1962 TOL 40" range. Because this one is self-cleaning it's what a 63 or a 64? And are those frames to hold custom panels? I'm a sucker for coppertone.

What's with those extra panels on the upper part of the door?

It almost looks like they are a small door in the door.

Cool for sure

or since it's a cooking stove, HOT!

John---get us some close-ups of the controls, too many buttons and dials to figure out! Is that a second oven on the left?

And all in time to start cooking a big turkey, congratulations!

Awesome range there!

May you be able to prepare many great meals! The two features is appear to lack are the Sensi-temp control and the select burner size on the large front burner.

Beautiful range there John!  Those decor panels really are something.

Mixguy - this range does have the Sensi-Temp control and the burner size switches.  The right-hand most dial is the Sensi-Temp dial, and the bottom left hand switch has the controls to adjust the burner size.  The dead give-away is the double sized left hand button.

Object Of Desire

Its a testiment to great design, something sadly missing in today's offerings. GE are great ranges and once you understand the values of the 5 fixed heats its the last time you have to think about what burner setting to use.

This is true...

we've never felt a need for more heat selections than the 5 on our many GE push button ranges... interestingly this one seems to have the same large push button sets as the original big-button "Piano-Key" TOL ranges of GE circa '57-59... wonder if they interchange?

First 40" GE Self-Cleaning Range

This range is a Y model so it should be a 1964 range. I plugged it in at the warehouse last night and everything works fine including all the lights, only problems are the clock and the bake element in the small left oven, both easy fixes, YAY.  The tempered glass panels on the oven doors were color keyed to the range color to contrast with it, I once found this range in the wood-tone color and the glass panels on this range were light gray, the range was in terrible shape so I saved the larger glass panel from the Rt oven door and use it for a surface saver on my dresser in the W Va house to protect the wood surface from damage various items that sit there.

I think that the glass panels were mainly for styling but they do add a little extra insulation to the doors however GEs other first SCOs did not use these panels.

RE Push Buttons...

I actually prefer fixed position switches, whether it be 5 or 7 heat,as has been said, once you get used to exactly how hot each is, you instinctively know which setting to use, not so with infinite heat controls, especially when they are old, they vary somewhat, and I find myself fiddling with the knob.I think that is why gas is easy to get used to, you SEE the flame so you get used to exactly how high it needs to be.

Paging John Lefever:

John:

In another thread regarding this range, you said it is replacing one a couple of years newer, and you asked if anyone was interested.

I would love more information, if the newer range is still around.....

Newer White GE 40" Range

It is still around, I got a chance to hook it up and check it out last weekend, it is in even better shape that the one I just got although it does have a few things wrong with it that are not very difficult to fix. It does need to find a new home and I would be able to fix it if needed, I will send you a message.
