Under what circumstances would it be an advantage to use dry chlorine bleach?
I know there used to be a product called Beads 'o Bleach, but it was before my time.

Dry Chlorine Bleach
Unlike it's liquid cousin does not obviously splatter or splash, so dosing is easier with less chances of getting the stuff where it shouldn't.
Not sure, and others more in the know can chime in, but IIRC the dry version of chlorine bleaches rinses from fabrics easier than the liquid and is slighly less aggressive.
Remember speaking with a Miele tech years ago about that brand's ban on LCB in their washers, and was told that occasional use of the dry version shouldn't be a problem.
Finally think the dry version of chlorine bleach is a bit more stable and has a longer shelf life (with proper storage), than liquid.

I like to use Dry Bleach on patient gowns. colored thermals and surgery scrubs surgons gowns ect.. As it Does not damage the fabric nor color as lcb does. It also helps kills the nasty odors we get from the Sugery Gowns and Drapes. Which are jade green and lcb is a no no. Have never had any problems with dcb though. Also much easier to rinse than lcb. Almost always gone with 1st split rinse. This time of year we have a lot of odor problems and it hit all the bases. A nice scrub powder too for cleaning sinks and counters. And much more stable as laundress said. That is VERY important for us in the Texas heat as now temps reach 112 to 115 daily in the plant.

Why would anyone use liquid chlorine bleach instead of the dry version? Why isn't the dry version widely available to home users?

Would not say it is SAFE for colors
Just far easier on them. It was widely available for years under a number of brand names. but only a few now.
it is more costly is one of the reasons is is not as freely available as it once was, but I am not concerned with that as much as I am being able to use it as I wish. With out a lot of the lcb drawbacks.

Whilst having some benefits over LCB, dry chlorine bleaches aren't without there own share of problems.
The stuff has been known to self heat, and if not stored properly will give off fumes that can react with whatever is around. This could pose some serious problems if the stuff is stored in a small closet or cupboard.
Also obviously one cannot pre-treat with dry chlorine bleach the way one can with sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine bleach). Well one could dilute the dry bleach into water and mix up a batch, but for most that is more trouble versus having the liquid version on hand to start.

I'd like to try it if it were available in less than commercial quantities. Just not having splash problems would be worthwhile.

I have used a locally made dry bleach product and liked it very much. Two years ago we bought a box when several of us were here for New Years and split it into more manageable quantities. Everyone really liked it as far as I know, it was easy to measure and use but while LCB is splashy, you likewise have to be careful when using the powder as loose grains of it can be damaging as well. The product we had seemed very strong, I can't find an MSDS or other info about it on their website but I can ask for a sheet the next time I go in to the City Sales office. I haven't bought more as the quantity is a bit large for the little I use any chlorinated bleach. I buy the Royal laundry detergent there - little/no sudsing whatsoever and since it already has STPP (I know!) it's a great performer and clean rinsing.

Most of the time I buy it from Ecolab
45 lbs box list for 145.00 but with our contract it is 78.oo . sometimes it is back order and I buy from others.. My Ecolab rep tells me they still sell quite a lot of it.. They must as the last 2 x I order I had to wait on backorder for almost a week.. and most of the time it is here the next day.

Here in Wausau we have Wausau Chemical Co., which makes and distributes a wide variety of chemicals including a vast array of laundry related products. They only sell STPP in bulk quantities (55 gal. drum), but they do sell to individuals.
