Any Ideas how I can convince my Mum and Dad who are sick of replacing our hoover every couple of years with cheap pieces of tat that dont perform after 6 months and spend the rest of the time faliing to pieces as our Hoover Pure Power and Morphy Richards are at the minute, with something that costs double yet lasts.

Mum refuses to spend the money on a Sebo X.1 for £199 because its just a hoover yet is happy to spend £90 a time on something from the Hoover/Candy company that is inferior to anything dead from the 1960's.

I cant get it thru that its far better and will , last longer!

Have left the internet page open on the right page when we were briefly connected the other week.

Left the Sebo brochure on the coffee table

Even told them of the site for Customer Testimonials.....

At my wits end!

Help! Please!

Rob

unfortunately some parents just don't see sense sometimes. Just keep pushing the issue, and explaining the benefits, if it works, it works, if it doesn't then looks like they will be replacing their hoover again next year lol. I had a breakthrough with mum recently and got her to stop putting her nice clothes on regular wash and then wondering why they get stretched and thrashed around, she uses perm press now, thought i would never win that argument lol.
Send us an email sometimes rob, i think your birthdays coming up soon so you might get something through the mail *wink*, unless i don't hear from you that is :P
Billy says hi :P

Awwwwww!

Dont rub it in! Not allowed any more pets especially dogs til I get my own place and that could be years!

I forgot to put in my post above that my parents have specifically asked for my advice and opinions on a new machine but wont listen!

It has to be an upright otherwise id reccomend my Miele! and cos they cost less and actually clean carpets.

I just know at some point Mum will compromise the money and we will end up with a piece of Dyson shit on offer at TJ Hughes or something for £140

Il personally save her the money and get her another purepower then as opposed to a Dyson.

Off topic a touch... back to it... convincing hmmmm

Its the same when I tried to make them see sense to get rid of that LG washer that dosnt even clean clothes to an acceptable standard let alone whites while we could sell it on second hand to some poor sod and put the money towards a Miele washer but no such luck!

There has to be a way to make them see what im saying - why ask for my opinions if they dont care?
Mum wouldnt go to a cheap inferior hair salon for fear of a dodgy haircut and spends money at a good one to look good first time round.
So why not spend the money on that Sebo??

GRRRR!!!!

LOL :)

oh yeah my birthday.....

Hi Rob -

I think you summed it up when you mentioned the cost of a good haircut. People generally enjoy getting a new hairdo, but I'm willing to bet the vast majority dont like cleaning. Therefore, purchasing a new vac comes way down on their list of priorities, because it's hard to feel enthusiastic about spending money on something you resent having to buy and use.

Case in point: for about two years I went without a lawnmower and let the grass grow wild. Didn't care one bit - I hate gardening, so it was easy to keep finding excuses to put off the purchase and spend the money on something more fun instead!

My only suggestion would be to purchase the vac as a gift. I did the same for my parents after they unwittingly bought a piece of trash that proved to be a headache and died shortly after the guarantee ran out. Almost ten years on they still have the cleaner and continue to be pleased with it, and now agree that choosing carefully and perhaps spending just a *little* bit more upfront is the key to being happier in the long run. When their vac needs replacing in future, they won't repeat their old mistake of picking out any old thing based on colour and price.

If that isn't an option, they've asked for your advice, and it's entirely up to them whether they take it or not. Should they end up with something that turns out to be yet another piece of landfill fodder, there's absolutely nothing wrong with saying "Told you so!" LOL.

It can be difficult to get parents to listen to their kids, no doubt. To some parents, a kid will always be a kid, no matter the age!

One thing you might try is to NICELY ask why they keep asking your opinion if theyr'e just going to ignore it every time! Maybe that'll not only help in the vac situation, but in others down the road!

Best of luck!

Vintage!

Why not introduce your parents to the pleasures of vintage vacs? Surely you can find something nice at a boot sale or similar, and as you already know, it will outlast and outperform anything new.

It will also cost very little, which ought to please your parents a great deal.

At any rate, it's worth a go, and I hope you'll consider it.

Robert,

I was 26 when you were born, 48 now. My parents were in a really bad car crash two years ago. Since then, they have needed (increasingly) my help.
But in their eyes, I am still a difficult 7 year old child. Anything I suggest, any idea I have will be dismissed. The funny thing is, my younger brother who seldom thinks clearly has their ear - at last. He does what I cannot and will not do: He sucks up to them.
I am not saying that is the key to your parents; but something is. They are asking your opinion, so obviously on some level it matters. If only to ask it and then do the opposite.
Figure out what behaviour will motivate them to see your point of view and then play it to the hilt.
If you can, like I said, I can't.
Guess at 7 I am still to young to dissemble well...

Rob, I go through this as well...

What I've found is helpful is, you have to SHOW them how much better the parts, the bag fittings, the brush roller, etc. are. Especially with Hoover's latest offerings, all you have to do is just compare them the fit and finish of the machines, and mention that, if they choose the cheaper option, all they're really choosing is to contribute to today's disposable junk culture, only to repeat the same process a year later (shopping, shlepping it home, assembly, hunting for different bags, etc.), and what a depressing, vicious cycle that is.

Might I suggest you also consider the Sebo Felix? What a nice vacuum, even lighter, and somewhat more inexpensive than the X-1....

(I'm trying myself to decide between buying the either new Dyson Slim, or investing in a restored Electrolux Silverado tank vac!)

Silverado!

Oxy:

That Silverado will last and last and last, due to its metal construction. Aerus (successors to Electrolux in the United States) still supplies parts, and there is an enormous aftermarket for parts as well.

Bear in mind that a new Lux is anywhere from $800-$1600, depending on the model. You're buying a machine that originally cost (in constant dollars) much more than a Dyson, and is also made better, in my humble opinion (which, truth to tell, isn't really all that humble, LOL).

You will enjoy the ready parts availability, the inexpensive bags, the swivel end on the hose (for genuine Aerus/Electrolux; most aftermarket hoses don't swivel, though a few do), the lack of blowout-prone electronics, the great suction, the quietude (none of today's jet-engine screech), and the sturdy attachments.

Electroluxes were made to be serviced; even the horsehair bristles on the attachments can be replaced without having to buy a whole new tool. I don't think you can say the same for anything made today, even Miele. Luxes are the centre-dial Maytags of the vacuum world- simple, strong, efficient, bullet-proof.

Parents! Bah! Sack Them! LOL ;-)

Hey, Rob! :-)

I’m afraid that many people these days – not necessarily their fault – simply see things like vacuum cleaners and washing machines as necessary evils, thus making them reluctant to spend what they consider to be rather large sums of money on them. The problem is, if you get them wrong, they go wrong!

Some cheap things in life are good; some are rubbish. We’ve been led to believe over the past 10 years or more that we live in “rip-off Britain”. We don’t, and we didn’t. We simply do not pay out enough money or pay enough attention to detail when it comes to purchases.

Explain to your parents, which I’m sure you’ve done already, that most vacuum cleaners except Sebos, Mieles and Numatics, are pretty much the same these days – much of a muchness. Sebos, Mieles and Numatics are something quite apart – they really *do* last much longer, give better performance and will be more hard durable. You cannot compare a Sebo with, say, a new Hoover, as you know – whatever salesmen might tell you.

I know money can be tight – and I think you mentioned this in your post – but what about saying to your parents that you’ll pay the difference between, say, a Dyson and a Sebo? That way, your parents shouldn’t have any worries about paying the extra for a Sebo. Trust me – Sebos are great! One your parents have a go with a Sebo in their own home, they’ll see the difference, especially when it goes son and on and on…

You can explain it all to your parents as much as you like and still get nowhere, even tough they say they’ll listen to your advice! However, even if my idea above of paying the balance doesn’t work, what about you buying one – if you can afford it – safe in the knowledge that your parents will pay the difference between it and a Dyson. If you go ahead and buy one now, get it in the house and show them how to use it, you might be surprised! That’s what I did anyway – I went ahead and bought a Sebo without asking, and my parents really like it! Same with the Kirby! LOL ;-)

And if you don’t e-mail Matt *and* get a Sebo within one week, I ain’t speaking to ya! ;-)

So get your skates on – chop chop! LOL ;-)

Take care. :-)

Regards,

Carl :-)

Rob...

I agree - the current uprights from Hoover UK are nothing but a pile of bloody rubbish.

I had a look at a Hoover 'Purepower' recently, and was dismayed at the agitator design. It wasn't an agitator - it had no beater nodules/bars. It was a skinny brushroll!

W.H. Hoover will surely be birlin' in his grave.

At least i have it easy with my gradnparents..

They hand me there credit card and tell me what they need.. I go buy it and voila... Learned to do this when i was 14 or so. Saved them the enedless nagging and hagging of there awful purchase and they get something good in the end
