While Cathy decided what to do with a Robinson-May gift card, I prowled the kitchen department and noticed a disturbing change in CorningWare.

I don't have to tell anyone here that real CorningWare is a vitreous material more like glass than, say, oh, stoneware. The newest assortments on the shelf bear a tiny notice:

Dishes made of stoneware.

Even worse, they're made in China, just like any other inexpensive stoneware cookware, but the price hasn't gone down to reflect the change in composition or country of manufacture.

Take care of the CorningWare you have. You won't be able to replace it if you break it.

The Pyroceram stuff was available under the name Corning Classics, but the line got smaller and smaller until it disappeared completely. Fortunately the stuff is damn near indestructible and pretty common on the secondhand market.

Interesting, I'll have to check some out next time I'm in a store. I wonder if it's just a specific line of product, they have a few different ones. Of course it's not surprise they're making it in China now like everyone else is. Low wages, little to non-existant pollution controls, endless supply of workers.
It's not that I begrudge China's modernization but all the foreign companies, not only the American ones are benefitting on those low wages and near non existant environmental controls manufacturers elsewhere have to abide by which in turn add to the costs. GM is marketing brand new US Models in China with no pollution controls, what a way to make a buck. So much for their enviromental concerns if you ever see them touting them. I'm sure the other auto makers do as well.

The pyroceram is not being made here, there or anywhere that I can find. Ebay and secondhand sales are the places where this finite amount of Corning Ware circulates. It's great great because running a grungy piece through the self cleaning oven really gets it clean except for metal marks and the like which need Barkeepers' Friend. Who would ever have thought that there would be a day when you could not buy Corning Ware? Don't they use it in the space program any more? What do they use for the nose cones now? Who would ever have thought that most of what's on the market in our nation was made in China?
