Cottage Stove Exhange 2016: Kelvinator to Frigidaire

A couple of weeks ago we got around to changing out the stoves at the cottage. Outgoing was a 1953 Kelvinator - a simple model without many features but it was a real workhorse and it never failed in any measure. Coming in this year is a 1957 Frigidaire Deluxe -

JOE - this one is for you!! We tore three pairs of silk gloves moving this thing ;-)

The "Sheer Look" is in at the cottage this season. Initially, there was an issue with getting the stove/broiler to work, but it turned out that the Cookmaster switch is worn out and will not stay in the "manual" position...once that was taken care of it worked beautifully. I especially love the quick pre-heat feature for the oven, which turns on the broil and bake element to get things up to temperature fast. It also has a Speed-Heat and Heat-Minder feature on the two front burners.

I wonder how many of these were discarded just because of the manual to automatic switch going bad.

I really like the console on this one Kevin.

Your cookmaster issue reminds me of a co-workers mother-in-laws 1958 Frigidaire French door wall oven, they had a gumband wrapped around the cookmaster switch and the timer switch to hold it in manual setting.
The oven was used that way for a good 25 years

Thanks so much for sharing another 'great stove exchange' It's nice to see a trend-setting, 'Sheer Look' put back in action-!  I too, am looking forward to the many recipes that will see the light of day thanks to the wonder of the Frigidaire.  

 

Does your oven have the 'Miracle Filter', so "... smoke is 'swallowed' before it reaches the kitchen by an automatic "Miracle Filter" that permits closed-door broiling"-?

Call me a frump but, I liked the simplicity of the Kelvinator.  Yes, it doesn't have all the bells & whistles that the Frigidaire has but that means there's less to go wrong as well.

Thank you all for watching our annual range exchange! Next to getting the cottage open for another season, it's my favorite part of spring. I never know which stove I'm going to put in until a week or two before. Honestly, sometimes it's the one that is easiest to get out of the storage unit!! It then comes to my garage for a good cleaning and then it makes the trip to the cottage for installation.

LOUIE - I don't know exactly how many stoves I have stored away at the moment, but I'm going to guess 25+?

SAM - Fussy Cookmaster switch is working fine with piece of cardboard ;-) I baked bread in the range yesterday and it performed well. Amazing what a rubber band, paper clip or piece of cardboard can fix. I'm guessing these switches went bad often.

STEVE - I don't know if it has the Miracle Filter. Does anyone know how I would find out?? It's the Deluxe model, so that feature may have only been available on the Imperials. Does anyone know?

JEFF - The stoves that come out go to a happy place where they can hang out with their other stove friends and talk about the good old days - and me, when I'm not around ;-)

Kevin, Ralph - thank you for sharing your 'new' Frigidaire stove with us.  Like Bob, I learned to cook on a Frigidaire (a '57 Super with no oven light, alas) and seeing yours brought back so many memories!  

 

When I saw that the oven wasn't heating, the first thing I thought was the Cookmaster wasn't set back to Manual - I'm glad to hear that was all it was!

 

One thing you'll probably notice is the distinct 'clunk' of the oven thermostat when it cycles on or off.  That was always my clue that the oven was preheated and ready for a cake or pie.
