What started out as a trip to pick up a washer & dryer, turned into 2 truck loads of stuff coming home with me!   Friends of mine are finishing moving out of their house today, because demolition for the remodel starts tomorrow.   Just about everything was going into the dumpster but I spoke up for a number of items, including these 2 boxes Tide and a large bottle of Tide liquid too!

After getting them home and making a closer inspection, I noticed the box on the left is a "1999 Collectors Package".   I believe they were sitting on the floor of the garage and obviously absorbed some moisture.   The box on the right was inside a larger (empty) tide box that looked the same as the one on the left.  This one is the "Tide Free" version w/o any dyes or perfumes.   I ended up throwing this one on the trash because the detergent smelled like "dirty - musty" what ever and wasn't pleasant.   The one on the left has a faint "Tide smell" and seems OK.

Your thoughts?

A couple other items.

I removed these lamps from the wall in the bathroom.  If anyone is interested in these, just pay the cost to box them up, plus shipping and they're yours!   Just message me.   Let me know if you want the dimensions.

BTW... the house was built in the 1940's a they believe these fixtures are original to the house, but I have no idea.

Hallway lamp

I also removed 2 of these lamps from the ceiling in the hallway.   While both were completely in tact, one had a large 5 inch crack running through it, so I left it there.

Again, if you are interested in this lamp, just cover shipping and it's yours!

Message me or send an email.

Hell, yeah

What could possibly go wrong? ;)

I'm using a box of Tide XK from the late Sixties now. It's just fine.

Enzymes from detergents this old may not be active. If that's an issue, add something like Biz or Tide Boost packs.

Thanks for the info on the Tide John!    The main reason I asked is because of the "moister" that had been absorbed at the bottom of the box, causing it to swell and deform as it has.

When scooping the Tide out of the box I noticed the detergent at the edge of the box was discolored brown, as if it had absorbed the color from the inside of the box.   Would this brown discoloration of the Tide effect it's cleaning ability OR do you think it could stain anything I wash with it???

Thanks again!

Justin, I only have one of those ceiling light fixtures because the other had a large crack in it (I left it there), but this one now has your name on it.

Moisture Is the Enemy Of All Powdered Detergents

Which is why it is advised they be stored in a cool and dry place. Product that has clumped and or shows obvious signs of being exposed to moisture may not perform well if at all. Chemicals such as phosphates, oxygen bleaches and a few others in particular break down in the presence of moisture.

As for "hard" detergent, when it comes to laundry products at least again normally this indicates "old" product and should be avoided. However the case of vintage Surf powder in my stash has several boxes that have hardened contents. One simply put the stuff into a large Rubbermaid container and stirred/broke it up into a powder again. Problem solved and the stuff has not given me any problems in washing.

Thank you Launderess.

The Tide in both boxex had "clumped", but it was easy enough to break it loose again.   As the "perfume free" Tide had absorbed an unpleasant musty odor, it went in the trash as I didn't want to risk transferring that odor to the laundry.

While the bathroom lights could possibly be original, they scream late 60's - early 70's (Mediterranean) to me. They look almost like companion fixtures to the ceiling fixture my aunt had in the bath of her house built around 1972.
