I don't have room in my kitchen for a "real" dishwasher. I've been thinking about a countertop model. Can anyone advise me about that, typically I tend to think of most new appliances as cheap and junky so I'd appreciate any advice out there.

only countertop dishwashers i have seen locally have been chinese made
danby and haier.Grabbed a smashed up danby at the dump a couple years ago
to examine;sheet metal stampings and cabinet assembly were pretty crude,
but the pumps were pretty decent for something chinese and (suprize)the
timer and pressure switches were german made...
Problems found with the dishwasher were a badly plugged wash pump inlet
screen and a bad connection to the heating element.
My local pamida had these but they were expensive at something like$300
(IIRC)and did not sell well-they eventually put them on closeout for
around$120 and the last 4 sold in about a week.
I see these in the consign shops sometimes,but considering where they are
made might need to be taken apart and connections checked, etc before
put into use(and the pump inlet screen checked LOL)

We had an 18" for about a year and it was an exercise in futility: always full or almost full and forget about large pots and pans. We wound up handwashing because it took so much less time than trying to fit things in the stupid machine. A countertop model is even more ridiculous, I mean how long does it take to handwash four place settings?

True one cannot fit large items in there, but that was expected wasn't it? I mean you aren't going to fit the same amount of laundry into a portable small washer as it's full sized cousin, are you?
Run ours either daily or every other day, sometimes longer depending upon how long it takes to get filled. Give the thing plenty of *hot* water and decent dishwasher detergent, results are more than fine.
What doesn't fit into the dishwasher, gets done the old fashioned way. Still am that glad to have the unit versus having to wash everything via hand.
This is my story, and am sticking to it!

My sister's mother-in-law has one of the Frigidaire 18" models, and it seems to suit her OK. Don't know why she got a small one, as her kitchen is plenty big enough.

I have an older Danby countertop and I LOVE IT! It's small which you would expect, but it washes well and it takes care of the obvious problem of not being able to have a full-size (or stand up portable).
EdgeStar, Koldfront and Avanti make a clone. The Haier model is now a close as well. Decent machines, I prefer the older ones withthe mechanical timer and heater switch vs the current electronic programmed models. Compact Appliance has a few to tak e a gander at, including the new generation with the full-width opening.

Picked up this machine in a Salvation Army thrift store.
Needed a good cleaning and a new set of hoses(under $10).
It is an excellent performer, and pretty fast.
The final rinse gets pretty hot to flash dry the dishes.

I think I'm pretty sure to say that You've never seen a Vintage 18 " KitchenAid.
I have never seen one. I believe the only ones that made 18 " machines are D+M, Whirlpool, Miele, and maybe one more MFG. Oh yeah Fridgilux.
The 18" I had back in the 90s was a D+M. It cleaned Very Well, and had a Tower. The newer ones actually have a full size spray arm under the upper rack. What's not to like about that ? And as I recall, it's the same size pump and motor (My D+M was) they put in a full size machine. Monsoon in a Bread Box.

I have a Briva sink dishwasher. I love it...It is over priced and you do have to have the sink space for the full size version. I have to say that I never use the full size dishwasher due to the Briva being so fast and it has it's own water heater making things even all the more clean. If I were in a smaller space I would still try to have one of these even instead of a regular DW.

this would be absolutely grand to find one of! I hijacked this off the sears 1975 thread. Ugh everything out there now is either black or white.

I own the danby 18 inch floor portable model.
I have had it for about 2 or 3 years and it works great. ss inside water softener built in. Manual clean filter. Not loud and gets everything clean first time. It also drys with steam. Only problem I have had is the bottom kick plate want stay on.
Youmust remove it to drain a overflow of suds. Thinks to finish tablets I had to do just that. I stick with powder now on. But finish did mail me a check for the tablets I had to pitch out.
Reason it this this water softener makes the water soft so they foam like mad.

that in the 18 inch portable models the Danby gets the best ratings, some have commented negatively about it's sink connection system being a weakness.

I never had a problem with the sank adapter at all. Best part unlike ge it is easy to replace if need hose screws to it and they sell it for 6 dollars. I bought a spear to use on a washing machine to make it portable.
They also have all there parts in stock. I was shock myself to find this out.So does danby have parts yes. I called them got there parts dept it ship from Pa warehouse. Ask the guy if they keeps parts at all times he told me they have the main parts motor pumps hose but tops and doors are special order.
the sank adapter is plastic like all of them now it has the red release presser button. And fits snug and never leaks heck I forget to turn the tap off sometimes and no problem at all.
I think the ones giving it bad on that part never used a portable anything. I watch a video of some woman trying to remove it with the water on. omg read the book. Turn water off push button then hold and slid ring easy as pie.
Only thing I will say is a week point is the bottom kick plate but it is not needed at all it is for looks only. Was going to replace it was 12.89 but said heck with it. I got the old one and night use magnets to hold it on.

...for me when I moved into a tiny flat in Sydney. Mine had a small upper rack for cups and an outer cabinet, but it was a really great unit....
