Some of you may have already discovered this, but when searching Craigslist, you may often want to search for your item under a common misspelling.

Some items go unsold because the person listing it misspelled the item's name and people cannot locate it when doing a search. This also occurs, sometimes, on Ebay

For example: My mid-1980's General Electric Compactor, was new unused and in the original box. But the person posting it on Ebay had it under "compacter", not compactor. So I got it for $25 with no other competing bids.

So when searching you might try some of the following misspellings which, unbelievably, I have seen:

"compacter" for compactor

"dish washer" for dishwasher

"water softner" for water softener

"drier" for dryer

So when searching, you might want to try some variations on the spellings of the item, and also the brands. Many people butcher the spellings of brand names!

Of course, you cannot search with every possible permutation, but you can try some of the more common misspellings.[this post was last edited: 12/7/2012-11:39]

..true..and to add, if it helps...

1) use one noun to search , like washer or divide the word, as mentioned like..."micro wave or microwave", "Kitchen aid" and "Kitchen aid" and use other descriptors, like "washing machine" vs. just "washer", etc.

2) use the search engines www.craigslist.extad.com and www.allofcraigslist.com. While they don't (I think)give you pinpoint results for your city, there's a regional selection(southeast, east, west, etc) you can select at one of the links.

3)If you're interested in a specific washer, and you used the above search engines, you can find more results using the craigslist search engine with just one word, "washer" and click "by owner" and sorting by low price.

Good luck, hope your searches return more of your expectations!

Also, "Range" and "Stove"

Some folks call 'em ranges, some call 'em stoves. Search on both.

And here's a hint for sellers: Post. A. Bloomin'. Picture. Borrow a camera, get a friend, relative or neighbor to take one for you, do whatever you have to - but Post. A. Bloomin'. Picture. If I can't see it, I can't fall in love with it.

This, of course, works for personal ads, too. ;-)[this post was last edited: 12/7/2012-19:33]

"but Post. A. Bloomin' Picture."

Dear, DEAR Yogi....

I hardly think it necessary to point out that I am not trying to sell myself here....

But since you think it's so mission-critical, I've re-added my old avatar to my profile.

right! ranges, stoves - good advice danemodsandy,

LOL! ...no ("bloomin") photo = no interest ; example : "Washer -need to be gone tomorrow, moving".

Or the appliance that has a photo, the size of an amoeba. You got some new iPhone with a new microscope app? cute, but how about filling up some of the white space on your ad? :-)

LOL

...you guy zis fUUUnnee...

I should have clarified my

, about Sandys comment.   It was just funny  AND TRUE.  I hate CL ads without pics.  It makes me question if its a real ad.

I'm just not as bold and sexy as our red goatteed Yogi , and yes I thought about the lack of pic on Sandys profile, but I didn't want to say anything... well, because, because, well, I'm basically just a shy, homely, house frau myself, whose picture resembles that of the underside of a Whirlpool belt drive.   Hence, my avatar.

Sandy is probably just the opposite.  He apparently doesn't need the added work of gentlemen callers all night.  I don't know.

"...just like his avatar..."  Yogi, your a sassy little smart mouth.   I bet you've got a cute butt, to go along with that cute mug.

Craigslist..ads...searching...now we're at avatars...

...so, some avatar's are blank for imaginative purposes, and then you have the open appliance (like the washer)that work the imagination vs. full frontal views....how this will help your Craiglist searching, though!

...talk among yourselves, I'm just passing by here, lmao.

range=stove=oven

I've found some nice stand alone stoves/ranges when searching "oven"

also - refridgerator is a VERY VERY common misspelling, I'd say about 70% of craigslist ads for fridges are spelled this way

No insult intended....we just like to get a glimpse of the personality and character behind who we are chatting with.....it all adds to our humor....

we like to see the avatars change, it gives us a little insight to show pics of oneself, or their interest, wether its machines, or cartoons, or somewhere they may have visited....

My Peeve . . .

Is when sellers can't be bothered to note when a range or dryer is gas or electric. If there's a photo you can almost always tell with the range (unless it's a Flair-type and closed or an older range with a top cover), but with a dryer it's often impossible to tell. Plenty of homes don't have hookups for both gas and electric; for instance where I live it would take substantial rewiring to use an electric range or dryer and I suspect most houses in the neighborhood are the same.

You get all types.....it would be nice if there were a standard of posting....

speaking of Gas/Electric dryers......I was selling a GAS dryer once, printed it in bold underlined letters, repeated to the guy several times that its a GAS dryer, he came, paid for them, once loaded in his truck, he noticed the smaller cord compared to one he has at home, and I replied "Yeah, thats all a gas needs is a standard 110 cord".....he wished he didn't waste a trip for a GAS dryer when he needed an ELECTRIC one....

GEE, you think somewhere in the ad or on the phone I would have told him it was GAS!

you get them from both sides, they either don't post it or read it!....

makes you wonder if I could sell a pull your head out of your ass extraction tool?

And for us stereo freaks:

Bang & Olsen
B&O
Bang & Oldster

All have gotten me some good deals on great B&O equipment. I picked up a pair of mint condition Bang & Olufsen S75 speakers for $60.00 including the stands! Great speakers in Rosewood cabinets too.

And let us not forget those adverts that say "Worked fine the last time it was used about 10 years ago!".

..and the age

Did you ever notice the age of the item they are selling often is a little, let's say "understated."

Is it me, or have all of you seen items frequently stated as "about eight years old."

Seems like I see this figure 8 a lot. Believe it or not, I have seen 15 - 20 year old appliances listed as "about eight years old."

When people don't know (or don't want to tell) I guess they figure this is a nice generic number that sounds old enough to be realistic but not so young as to sound like an obvious lie.

also...

while searching Craigslist for fun today, I discovered

a "stainless steal" dishwasher

a "frezer"

and a "water dispencer"
