Gee, maybe like a discount for paying cash? Seems to me I saw something like that elsewhere in this thread. That's exactly why it's offered. They offer $0.03 off per gallon, but save somewhere near $0.05 per gallon (figuring at $2 a gallon and a discounted merchant rate of 2.5%).

And, contacting the card moguls (Visa International, for example) does make a difference. A gas station I reported in Chelmsford MA got a chargeback and had to change their policy. It's all in taking the time to report it.

I'm not saying it's going to work every time, but if it works even 1/3 of the time, that's a pretty good batting average! If you ever report a company for this, just save the letter and change the details as needed!

Merchant account providers already generate a monthly statement that lists sales totals, each daily sales batch and deposit, further subtotaled by card type (Visa, MC, Discover, etc.), deducted card discounts, monthly processing and service fees, etc. The information is already being tracked. I can log into the merchant account online and pull up months of history. Seems just a matter of totaling and arranging the numbers from a database into the required format, probably transmitted to the IRS electronically with a paper copy to the merchant. A programming job, sure, but hardly seems catastrophic. Our provider (Innovative Merchant Solutions) has already integrated Discover figures and deposits into the single report with Visa & MC. Discover was previously handled separately by Discover.
